Outstanding Student-Athletes Recognized by Board of Education

At the August 10 meeting of the Sachem Board of Education, the Board recognized several student-athletes and teams for their incredible accomplishments during the spring season on the local, state and national levels.

The Sachem High School North varsity softball team was recognized for being named League 1 champions and a Scholar-Athlete team. The team was a finalist in the Suffolk County playoffs and ranked 11th in New York State. Additionally, Mackenzie White was honored for being named All-County, All-Long Island, All-State and League 1 Pitcher of the Year.

Sachem High School East’s varsity baseball team was also named League 1 champions and a Scholar-Athlete team. Rich Heyder and Nick Oelcher were designated All-County, All-League and All-Long Island student-athletes.

At the national level, two students culminated their track and field seasons at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Philadelphia. Megan Hoffmann placed second in the nation for race-walking, while Abby Callinan placed sixth in the same event. In addition, Hoffmann was named an All-County, All-League and All-Long Island athlete in girls track.

A number of individual student-athletes were honored for their achievements. Anna Morrongiello and Emma Parente were named All-Long Island in the first-ever girls flag football season. Christian Mercado received an All-County, All-Division and All-State designation in boys track.
