Hiawatha Elementary School held its annual STEAM Night on Feb. 26, inviting families to participate in hands-on activities focusing on science, technology, engineering, art and math.

Students rotated through several stations throughout the evening. They were encouraged to design and create at the art station set up in the cafeteria, they used the multipurpose room for science experiments, built freely with Legos in the lobby and engaged in math activities.

The gymnasium was set up as the robotics center where the Sachem Public Library provided micro robots for students to use and the Sachem Robotics Team, Aftershock, worked with students. The team had their 2023 robot “Choas” in attendance. They explained to students its features and design process. The elementary school students had the opportunity to control the robot and attempt at scoring a basket by activating its shooter mechanism. “Choas” even went up against Dr. Pellettieri in a basketball shootout! The team’s smaller robots, “Root” and “Dash,” were also on hand to teach students how to block code.
