A series of lessons on the colonial times that took place last school year sent fourth grade students at Hiawatha Elementary School back in time as they participated in several activities that recreated aspects of that important time in American history.
Through their exploration of colonial times, students researched everyday life, games, transportation, food, clothing and commerce. As part of the engaging activities, students practiced penmanship with quill pens and ink, performed math on slate boards and reinforced their spelling and geography skills during a bee.
During an event that culminated their expansive study, students dressed up in attire that was popular during that time period. In addition, family and friends were invited for an outdoor picnic where they made checkerboards, spinning tops and played colonial games.
