Thanks to the performance by Samuel Sylia at this year’s Suffolk County chess championship, Sachem East has produced champions in three of the last four years. The chess dynasty is alive and real in Sachem.

Sylia went undefeated for all five of his matches for a clear win ahead of over 50 players from across Suffolk County.

“Sam mentioned that he felt well prepared for playing chess, and also felt mentally tougher than his opponents,” said adviser and science teacher Dr. Stephen Wefer.
