Students at Sagamore Middle School in Mrs. Spatola and Mrs. Gelderman’s sixth grade math classes recently learned about computer aided design using math terms. With help from Sagamore librarian Mrs. Bucher, students were introduced to Tinkercad, a website where students can design their own nameplates.

Among the math concepts discussed included dimensions, parameters, millimeters, axis, inequality terms, degrees, scale and proportions. Students worked within specific dimensions to design a base using length, width and height and also had to decide if they wanted their nameplates to be on one horizontal plane or on two planes, horizontal and vertical.

As part of the lesson, teacher- and librarian-led discussions focused on the real-world applications of 3D design and printing and the many industries that utilize the technology, including ways it was used in the medical field during the COVID-19 pandemic. Once their designs met the required parameters established by Mrs. Spatola and Mrs. Gelderman, Mrs. Bucher printed their designs on the MakerBot 3D printer in the library.
