Across the Sachem Central School District, students and staff collectively blanketed the district in purple attire and heartwarming lessons and activities in a special show of support for mental health awareness, as part of the annual celebration of P.S. I Love You Day on the second Friday in February.

As part of their weeklong celebration promoting kindness, students across grade levels participated in social-emotional learning activities that let them share uplifting messages with their peers. Students completed activities such as creating Kindness Grams, sharing kind messages with classmates they normally would not socialize with to create deeper connections throughout the school community. They also crafted puzzle pieces showcasing ways they have lifted others up in the past and created cards for a random classmate showcasing reasons friends are special.

Several buildings created virtual resources for students to visit to expand the reach of this celebration of kindness and mental health awareness. Daily postings of mental health messages with the theme of “Together, We Will Rise” promoted kindness, self-love and self-care. The day allowed students to thank and acknowledge members of the Sachem community who lift them up, make their day and make others feel valued by filling out a form to send them a special postcard.

For several years, Sachem has participated in P.S. I Love You day in a proactive effort to prioritize student's mental health and normalize expressing their feelings in a safe and caring environment.
