A recent study of a winter wonder in Cathy Dulovic’s third grade class at Lynwood Avenue Elementary School led students on an exploration of snowflakes and their endless intricacies.

As part of a unit on literacy, students read the story “Snowflake Bentley” by Wilson Bentley, in which they learned about Bentley’s passion for photographing different snowflakes. Students watched a biography on Bentley and viewed a collection of the unique snowflakes he has captured in his photographs.

During a STEAM activity, students utilized Q-tips and marshmallows to create their very own unique snowflakes using the photographs they reviewed for inspiration.
