Students in grades K-3 at Merrimac Elementary recently took part in an immersive, in-school experience all about trains. The engaging event featured three rotating centers designed to educate and inspire curiosity through hands-on activities and interactive learning.

At the STEM center, students transformed recycled shipping boxes into creative components of a full train model, applying design and engineering skills. In the virtual field trip center, students explored the workings of a real steam train, discovered how trains communicate, and learned to interpret train-related signs. Meanwhile, at the train table center, students worked together to build train tracks and operated toy trains to simulate real-world rail interactions.

To tie the experience together, students built their own snack trains using an assortment of treats and a train-themed placemat. The day concluded with a real-world simulation: Students used play money to purchase train tickets and “board” the STEM train, bringing the entire learning journey full circle.

The event offered a rich blend of creativity, collaboration and critical thinking, making it a memorable learning day for Merrimac’s youngest learners.
