The Sachem Central School District Board of Education has announced a series of internal administrative appointments, all of which are probationary and effective July 1, with one early start.
Elizabeth (Beth) Caruana has been appointed Executive Director for Special Education, with her new role having begun on May 10. A long-standing member of the district, Caruana previously served as Assistant Director for Special Education. Her extensive background in special education leadership and behavior analysis prepares her well for this districtwide role overseeing both elementary and secondary programs.
Ashley Shepard has been named Administrator for Elementary Special Education, effective July 1. Shepard brings valuable experience and leadership from within the district, and her transition supports the district’s continued focus on strengthening services at the elementary level.
Coleen Flanagan, currently an assistant principal, will move into a leave replacement administrative position as the Administrator for Secondary Special Education, also effective July 1. Flanagan’s administrative experience positions her well to support the district’s secondary-level special education programs during this transition period.
Jennifer Kropff, the only appointee transitioning directly from a teaching role, has been appointed Assistant Director of Special Education. With more than a decade of experience in behavioral and special education, Kropff brings strong expertise in crisis intervention, individualized education plans, and staff development. She holds a school district leader certificate and dual teaching certifications.
Dr. Thomas Desmond, current principal of Wenonah Elementary School, will assume a new district-level leadership role as Executive Director for Personnel. With experience at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, as well as a doctorate in educational administration, Desmond brings a proven track record of instructional leadership and a strong commitment to student success.
These appointments reflect Sachem’s ongoing dedication to fostering leadership from within and ensuring continuity in educational excellence throughout the district.
