Chris Herren, a former professional basketball player who played in the NBA and overseas, visited Sachem High School East on Nov. 28 for a powerful presentation about addiction and substance use prevention. Sophomores gathered in the building’s auditorium where they first watched a video about Herren’s life, journey to the NBA and struggles with drug abuse.

Herren then came out to speak with students, noting the importance of looking at addiction with a different lens, changing the focus from the last day to the first day. He emphasized the importance of positive self-esteem and self-worth. Students walked away from the presentation feeling empowered to make positive life choices and to start conversations around wellness.
