Students at Nokomis Elementary School are honoring influential women throughout March for Women’s History Month. Most recently, Ms. Bonnie Faust’s fourth and fifth graders learned about Alma Woodsey Thomas, the first African American woman to have a solo exhibit at the Whitney Museum in New York City, as well as the first to have her art displayed at the White House, during former President Obama’s tenure.

Ms. Faust’s students first read a book about Thomas before creating a timeline of her important life events. The unit culminated with art inspired by her technique. Students created their own paintings using short bars of color to create shapes and patterns.
