At the June 1 meeting of the Sachem Central School District Board of Education, the Board recognized several students and a staff member for recent accomplishments.

Vishruth Katti, a fifth grader at Tamarac Elementary School, was honored for placing first in a Suffolk County Math Competition with the only perfect score in the tournament. In addition, he was the districtwide spelling bee champion. Tamarac Principal Dr. Brenda Almendarez-De Bello noted that Vishruth is an exceptional role model to his peers and always demonstrates the desire to help others.

Additionally, Sachem High School North student Ethan Francilot was recognized by the Board for being accepted to the 2022 Simons Summer Research Program at Stony Brook University. The program seeks academically gifted high school applicants from across the country. Ethan will be working with an immunologist to complete science research on the immunopathology of the COVID-19 virus.

The art department proudly introduced a number of high school students for their outstanding achievements this year. Sachem North ninth grader Jahzara Angelique Reyes was chosen as the Suffolk County Regional PTA Reflections Contest winner. Several students from both high schools were also recognized for receiving ribbons in the Bay Area Friends of the Fine Arts show: Dylan Berkowitz, Samantha Christian, Madison Grasso, Lena Paolicelli, Alexander Polakos, Aliyah Serbu and Jack Straub.

Lastly, High School North teacher Christy Zummo was acknowledged for being one of 12 teachers from across the country to win a $1,000 classroom grant from Teachers Federal Credit Union. Ms. Zummo’s student who nominated her in this Teacher Appreciation Week contest was present to speak about Ms. Zummo’s impact inside and outside the classroom.
