The Sachem Central School District recognized a high school student and staff member at its Oct. 11 Board of Education meeting. Before honoring these members of the Sachem family, the Board acknowledged the tragic events happening overseas, as well as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Members of the Board and district administrators all wore purple to show their support for the cause and all those impacted by it.
The first recognition of the evening acknowledged High School North student Ashley Edgar who was applauded for receiving a perfect score on her AP Capstone Research Assessment. Her research studied how the behavior of fish is influenced by melodies and rhythm. She is one of only 357 students worldwide and the first student in Sachem history to earn this achievement.
Additionally, the Board of Education recognized a staff member at Grundy Avenue Elementary School for her life-saving efforts. Last month, Ashley Kenyon, a lunch aide at the building, saved a student who was choking on a chicken nugget by performing the Heimlich maneuver. The child was assessed by the school nurse and safely returned to class. The Board and district administrators thanked Ms. Kenyon for her quick thinking and actions that saved a student.
