Former professional basketball player, Chris Herren, visited Sachem High School East on Nov. 29 to share a powerful message about substance use prevention and addiction. Tenth graders first watched a video outlining Herren’s basketball career from his high school days in Massachusetts to playing for Division 1 teams to ultimately going pro in the NBA and overseas. Throughout the film, students got a look into Herren’s struggles with addiction during his career.

Herren then came out to speak with the 10th graders and share his path to recovery. He empowered students to rethink how they look at addiction and through sharing his own experiences, touched on topics such as drinking and drug use, peer pressure and bullying. Through each presentation, Herren hopes to make a difference in at least one person’s life.
