Samoset Middle School Celebrates Constitution Day and America’s 250th Anniversary

Samoset Middle School students celebrated Constitution Day and the 250th anniversary of the United States with a week filled with educational activities, patriotic challenges and school spirit. 

Organized by Social Studies Chairperson Michelle Kisilinsky and social studies teacher Deb Hughes, the celebration engaged students throughout the building while bringing American history and civics to life.

“The kids had a ball celebrating America’s 250th anniversary and Constitution Day,” Kisilinsky said. “The activities got them involved and excited about the educational process.”

Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade social studies classes completed activities focused on Constitution Day and America’s semiquincentennial. Their work will be preserved in a time capsule commemorating the historic milestone.
Students also signed the “Samoset Constitution of Excellence,” pledging to be students of character and people of purpose in school, throughout their community and in their daily lives.

The week included several interactive challenges. Students searched the building for 250 hidden red, white and blue stars, as well as 100 miniature patriotic resin ducks placed in classrooms and hallways. Students could exchange items collected during lunch periods for prizes.

Students also tested their knowledge with 100 trivia questions covering American history, U.S. geography, government and national symbols, landmarks, culture and other fun facts. A Constitution Day photo booth allowed students to pose with patriotic props, while a schoolwide spirit week encouraged students and staff to wear red, white and blue clothing, socks and accessories.

“There was a variety of activities taking place in our social studies classrooms throughout the entire building,” Hughes said.2

Through a blend of classroom learning, friendly competition and patriotic school spirit, Samoset students gained a deeper appreciation for the U.S. Constitution and the history behind America’s 250th birthday.
