Students from Sachem North and Sachem East demonstrated their dedication to scientific inquiry and innovation this spring by competing in two prestigious research competitions: the 2026 Long Island Science Congress and the 2026 New York State Science and Engineering Fair (Andromeda Division).

The Long Island Science Congress was held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, while the New York State Science and Engineering Fair. Both events brought together hundreds of talented student researchers from Nassau and Suffolk counties to present original scientific investigations and compete before panels of expert judges.

Representing Sachem’s Science Research Program, students presented projects spanning a wide range of disciplines, including medicine and health sciences, ecology, sociology, mycology and materials science. Their work reflected months, and in many cases years, of independent research, experimentation, data collection and analysis.

Throughout the competitions, students participated in three rounds of judging, where they discussed every aspect of their research. Judges evaluated the students’ understanding of their topic areas, research methodologies, data analysis, conclusions and potential future applications of their work.

Beyond the competition itself, the events allowed students to connect with peers from across Long Island, gain valuable feedback from scientists and educators, and further develop the communication skills necessary for future academic and professional success.

Sachem’s participation in both the Long Island Science Congress and the New York State Science and Engineering Fair underscores the district’s commitment to fostering inquiry-based learning and providing students with meaningful opportunities to pursue advanced scientific research.

The accomplishments of these young researchers continue to reflect the strength of Sachem’s Science Research Program and its mission to inspire the next generation of scientists, innovators and problem-solvers.
