mentalSachem East ninth graders recently took part in a meaningful mental health assembly featuring representatives from the #SameHere Global Mental Health Movement, including founder Eric Kussin and former professional boxer and U.S. Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Boyd Melson.

Held in the school auditorium during periods two and three on May 18, the program focused on encouraging open conversations surrounding mental and emotional wellness while helping students better understand the importance of seeking support and supporting others.

The #SameHere Global Mental Health Movement works with schools and communities nationwide to normalize mental health conversations and create environments where students and staff feel safe expressing themselves. Through its #SameHere Schools initiative, the organization promotes emotional development, self-regulation, resilience, and peer connection.

Melson shared his personal experiences balancing the pressures of professional athletics and military service while emphasizing perseverance, wellness, and the importance of looking out for one another. A graduate of the United States Military Academy and a Give an Hour ambassador, Melson used his story to connect with students and reinforce that mental health challenges can impact anyone.

Kussin spoke about the mission behind the movement and the importance of creating school cultures where conversations about mental health are treated with the same care and attention as physical health.

School officials said the assembly was designed to foster a more supportive atmosphere within the Sachem East community, provide students with practical tools for understanding emotional wellness, and encourage empathy among peers.
