Islanders Broadcaster Brendan Burke Inspires Sachem Journalism Students During WSHR Visit
Sachem North welcomed a special guest from the world of professional hockey media: New York Islanders broadcaster Brendan Burke, who visited the campus to speak with journalism students and share insights from his career.
Burke spent time in the classroom discussing his journey through the sports media industry, offering students a behind-the-scenes look at broadcasting, storytelling, and the day-to-day demands of covering hockey at the highest level. His message focused on persistence, relationship-building, and seizing opportunities in a competitive field.
The visit also extended into the studio, where Burke joined Sachem’s student-run radio station, WSHR, for a live appearance on 91.9-FM’s “The Final Score.” He was interviewed by student broadcasters Patrick Coursen, AJ Bracero, and Chase Biesiadecki, who led a wide-ranging conversation about his career path, experiences in hockey media, and advice for aspiring journalists.
Burke’s visit offered students a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with industry experience, reinforcing the value of authentic storytelling and professional preparation.
The guest lecture and on-air appearance were made possible by Sachem North teacher Jon Weston, who coordinated the visit through a personal connection with Burke.
WSHR, which has operated since the 1960s, is a 6,000-watt educational radio station and one of the farthest-reaching school-based frequencies in the tri-state area, as well as the largest of its kind on Long Island. The station continues to serve as a hands-on training ground for student journalists, providing real-world experience in live broadcasting and production.
