Sachem School District’s commitment to unity, culture, and community was on full display Saturday, March 28, as more than 1,000 students, families, staff, and local residents gathered at Samoset Middle School for the fourth annual Sachem CommUNITY Celebration.

The event, made possible through a collaborative effort among students and staff across the district, along with the support of numerous community leaders and organizations, transformed the school into a vibrant hub of culture, creativity, and connection throughout the day.

“It’s a wonderful atmosphere,” said Dr. Georgia Afxendiou, principal of Samoset Middle School and one of the key organizers of the event. “It’s so welcoming. It’s family. It’s been so great, and it shows the true diversity of the Sachem community.”

Designed to highlight the diversity and togetherness that define the Sachem community, the celebration featured a wide range of experiences, including cultural food tastings, live music and dance performances, an art showcase, and informational tables hosted by local organizations. Attendees had the opportunity to explore traditions from around the world while engaging with neighbors and community partners in a welcoming, inclusive environment.

The scale and energy of the event reflected months of planning and volunteerism, with organizers emphasizing that the outcome was well worth the effort.

From colorful performances to meaningful conversations at community tables, the celebration reinforced the district’s ongoing commitment to fostering understanding, respect, and pride among its diverse population.

Now in its fourth year, the Sachem CommUNITY Celebration continues to grow in both size and impact, serving as a signature event that brings the district together while honoring the unique backgrounds and shared values that make up the Sachem community.
