Sachem Students Explore Career Pathways at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian

Students from Sachem East and Sachem North took learning beyond the classroom last week, participating in an immersive “Farm Experience” field trip at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian.
The trip, part of the district’s World of Work program, provided students with a firsthand look at career opportunities through Pal-O-Mine’s renowned vocational initiative, J-STEP (Job Security Through Equine Partnership).
Through hands-on experiences across multiple career tracks—such as horticulture, custodial maintenance, animal care, and editorial work—students gained valuable insight into how workplace skills are applied in real-world settings. The program also highlights entrepreneurial pathways, including its community-supported agriculture (CSA) initiative and partnerships with local businesses.
“It was an inspiring look at how programs like J-STEP create meaningful opportunities for young adults in our community,” said Lacey Donlon-Kraker, a transition coordinator and social worker at Sachem East. “Our students were fully engaged and able to connect what they’re learning in school to potential career paths.”
The experience underscores Sachem’s commitment to preparing students for life after graduation by connecting them with community-based programs that support career exploration and workforce readiness.
District officials expressed appreciation to Pal-O-Mine for providing students with a meaningful and educational experience that highlights the importance of hands-on learning and community collaboration.
