Tanger
Hiawatha Elementary School has taken an important step toward supporting student wellness and success by receiving a $2,000 grant from Tanger Kids to fund the creation of a new sensory room.

The initiative, led by elementary school counselor Katie Healy, is designed to provide students with a dedicated space to regulate emotions, refocus, and return to the classroom ready to learn.

“With this project, we aim to create a calming, structured environment that supports the emotional and behavioral needs of all students,” Healy said. “For many children, especially those experiencing anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or attention challenges, access to a sensory-friendly space can make the difference between frustration and success.”

The sensory room will be equipped with a variety of tools and resources, including tactile materials, soft lighting, flexible seating, and calming visuals. These elements are intended to engage students’ senses in positive ways while helping them develop essential coping strategies such as mindfulness, self-awareness, and emotional regulation.

Educators say the impact of the room will extend far beyond the space itself.

By reducing sensory overload and promoting emotional balance, the sensory room will help students feel safe, supported, and prepared to learn. The goal is to foster confident, resilient learners who can manage challenges both inside and outside the classroom.

The grant from Tanger Kids underscores a continued commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance student well-being and create inclusive learning environments.

School officials expressed gratitude for the funding, noting that the sensory room will serve as a valuable resource for years to come, benefiting students academically, socially, and emotionally.
