Sachem Partners with Blessings in a Backpack to Fight Weekend Hunger

Posted Date: 9/23/25 (9:42 PM)

Sachem teamed up with Blessings in a Backpack for a community service initiative hosted at Sachem High School East, assembling food bags that will help ensure students have reliable nourishment over the weekend. Members of the district’s administrative team were on hand lending support, packing items, and thanking volunteers for turning out in force.

Blessings in a Backpack is a national nonprofit that mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on weekends for school-aged children who might otherwise go hungry. Guided by a simple, powerful vision that every school-aged child in America has the nourishment needed to learn and grow, the organization empowers local partners to take action so kids return to school on Monday ready to focus, learn, and thrive.

During the Sachem East event, district leaders joined staff and volunteers to assemble bags with kid-friendly, shelf-stable items. The effort reflects Sachem’s ongoing commitment to supporting the whole child, meeting not only academic needs but also basic needs that directly affect learning and well-being. Volunteers also helped organize distribution so that the bags reach students discreetly and efficiently.

Weekend hunger remains a critical challenge for many families, and programs like Blessings in a Backpack offer a proven, community-driven solution. By partnering with the nonprofit, Sachem is strengthening a safety net for students while modeling service, empathy, and civic responsibility for the broader school community.

The district extends its gratitude to the volunteers and partners who made the event possible and invites community members to get involved in future pack-outs and related efforts.
