Sachem East Nutrition Students Get Firsthand Look at Healthy Eating During Hummus Fit Field Trip
Sachem East students in the Nutrition elective stepped outside the classroom and into the real world during a hands-on educational field trip to Hummus Fit and Buffin Muffin in Lake Grove.
Students toured both facilities and learned directly from industry professionals about the nutrients in everyday foods, portion control, meal prepping, and innovative alternatives to fast food.
The experience was designed to reinforce classroom lessons with tangible, real-life examples of what healthy eating looks like in action.
Students also had the chance to explore how balanced meals are created, how ingredients are selected, and why thoughtful preparation matters. As a bonus, Hummus Fit provided lunch for all 30 students attending the trip.
Sachem East health teacher Scott Tierney said the opportunity brought the curriculum to life.
“Bringing our nutrition lessons into the community gives students a real look at how healthy eating actually works," he said. "At Hummus Fit, they saw firsthand that nutritious meals don’t have to be bland; they can be flavorful, convenient, and made with purpose. Experiences like this make the learning meaningful, memorable, and connected to the world right outside our school.”
The trip offered students a deeper understanding of how to implement healthy choices in their own lives and showcased local businesses that prioritize wellness.
