A play written by a Sachem High School North English teacher is being produced and taking the stage at The Actors Conservatory Theatre. Stefan Francis Kelleher recently entered his play, “Flit,” into the annual one-act playwriting competition sponsored by the theatre. This year’s theme was “Diverse Voices” and Mr. Kelleher’s historical, yet comedic, piece about a marginalized group’s experience with the American justice system was a perfect fit. “Flit” was chosen from the entries to be awarded a generous prize and produced as a staged reading for the theatre’s 2023 season.
Mr. Kelleher was able to write “Flit” during the summer break. As an accomplished author, playwright and teacher, he hopes his writing process inspires his students.
“I suppose it’s an occupational hazard of being an English teacher for as long as I have, but I write a little every day to make sense of my world, just as I encourage my students to do when I’m with them in the classroom,” he said.
“Flit” will be performed at The Actors Conservatory Theatre at 7 p.m. on Sept. 22 and Sept. 23. In addition to this most recent play, Mr. Kelleher has published a novel, “Felix the Red,” and a full-length play, “Hamlet and the Pirates,” within the past few years — all of which incorporate the unifying theme of personal courage.
