Sachem High School East freshman Olaf Tur competed in the Long Island Regional National History Day competition at Hofstra University on March 26. This year’s theme was “Frontiers in History.” Olaf’s paper was about the life of Witold Pilecki, a Polish intelligence agent and voluntary inmate of Auschwitz, who spent two and a half years gathering intelligence from within the camp. His research was completed as part of a brand-new freshman class at Sachem called Humanities Research.
Olaf had to defend his paper and explain his research as part of the interview process. He competed in the Senior Research Paper category against 22 other entries from Long Island. Although he did not move onto the state competition it was an honor to compete against the most competitive group of high school historians!
