The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office visited first and second graders at Nokomis Elementary School for a three-week student safety program. As part of the McGruff Safety Program, children engage in their communities while learning about how to keep themselves safe.

Students learned important tips including how to prevent bullying, what to do in case of an emergency and what to do if a stranger approaches them. They were encouraged to memorize their home address and an emergency contact phone number. During a hands-on activity, students practiced dialing 9-1-1 and speaking with an operator.

The program instills safety measures in students at a young age while fostering positive relationships with law enforcement officers.
