Chris Herren Delivers Powerful Message of Resilience and Recovery to Sachem Sophomores
Sachem welcomed back renowned speaker and former professional basketball player Chris Herren for another powerful and emotional presentation to the sophomore class. Herren, who has visited Sachem East annually, shared his deeply personal journey of addiction, adversity, and ultimately recovery — a message that has resonated with students and families across the nation.
He visited both Sachem East and Sachem North this year.
Herren’s presentation, known for its honesty and raw storytelling, challenged students to think critically about their choices, their mental health, and the pressures they face as they grow up. His conversation centered on early decision-making, self-worth, and the importance of seeking help when life becomes overwhelming.
Sachem East Principal Lou Antonetti praised the impact of Herren’s visit, emphasizing why his message remains a staple of the school’s annual programming.
“There's no day like Herren Day… the only guest speaker we hire because he’s the best!” Antonetti said. “He speaks to our 10th-grade class each year — a real-life wake-up call for kids. I think a lot of kids woke up and grew up today after listening to his story.”
Herren, the founder of the Herren Project and a national leader in substance-use prevention and wellness education, encouraged students to reflect on the pressures they encounter and to prioritize their mental and emotional well-being. His discussion sparked meaningful conversations among students and staff, reinforcing Sachem East’s commitment to supporting the whole child.
Administrators and teachers expressed gratitude for Herren’s ongoing partnership and his dedication to returning year after year to make a difference in the Sachem community. As always, his message left a lasting imprint — inspiring, challenging, and empowering students to choose a healthier path forward.
