Sachem East has officially launched a brand-new initiative to build a positive culture, celebrate kindness, and reinforce the values that make its school community special. The Character Coin Era has begun — and students are already stepping up in remarkable ways.

Principal Lou Antonetti believes this program will help students stay focused on what matters most.

“Now that students are less distracted without phones, Sachem East admin and staff hope this will encourage them to be the best they can be daily,” Antonetti said.

What Is a Character Coin?

Each Character Coin is more than just a collectible. It serves as a symbol of integrity, leadership, and responsibility — and earning one comes with recognition and a chance to win a $250 gift card at the end of each marking period. Students can be nominated by teachers, staff, or administrators who witness acts of character, big or small. The goal is simple: Lead with a good deed. 

Recognizing Our First Honorees

Sachem East was proud to announce its first Character Coin recipients of the 2025 school year — two students who embody the spirit of the initiative.

• Solange Camille Carrere, 11th Grade ... Nominated by Ms. Madrid, Solange stepped up to help in the classroom when a fellow student became ill. Her quick thinking, calm support, and compassion made a meaningful difference. Thank you for leading with kindness, Solange! 
• Dominick Collins, 12th Grade ... Dominick has shown tremendous personal growth, demonstrating resilience and determination despite the obstacles he has faced. His teachers noted a “great turnaround” and praised his positivity and perseverance. 

A School Culture Built on Character

As the Character Coin Era takes shape, Sachem East is building momentum around daily acts of kindness, responsibility, and leadership. Students are encouraged to show empathy, help others, take initiative, and create an environment where everyone can thrive.

More recipients will be highlighted throughout the year as Sachem East continues to celebrate the everyday heroes right inside our classrooms and hallways.
