WSHR 91.9-FM Reemerges With Student-Run, Digital-First Media Operation

Posted Date: 9/13/25 (11:57 AM)

WSHR 91.9-FM, Sachem Radio, has reemerged as a student-run, digital-first media outlet for the Sachem community, launching a multiplatform newsroom that pairs radio with video, photography, and real-time social reporting. The station debuted a 15-person student media team, its largest game-coverage crew on record, during Week 1 varsity football at both Sachem East and Sachem North.

From the press box, a student broadcast team called each game from start to finish. While the call was recorded (not yet live), full playback will air on WSHR platforms. On the field, a roving team captured photos and video and posted updates in real time across social channels, showcasing a coordinated multi-platform approach that reflects the station’s new editorial model.

The students, enrolled in Sachem’s high school broadcasting classes, represent a range of interests, including journalism, audio and video production, and social media storytelling. Working alongside faculty advisors, they are building a modern content pipeline that meets the community where it is: on air, online, and on social.

WSHR is simultaneously upgrading its programming, branding, and purpose as it pivots to a digital-first strategy “by the students, for the community.” In the coming weeks, the station will unveil new student programs and shows and publish a “Game of the Week” schedule, sending reporters to a rotating slate of athletic events throughout the school year.

Sachem continues to expand real-world learning opportunities across career pathways, including media, where countless alumni have gone on to successful professional roles. Community members can follow the newsroom’s journey and game-day coverage on Instagram and X @WSHRSachem.
