The Sachem Central School District is proud to announce the promotion of Ashley Shepard to Administrator for Elementary Special Education. Shepard, who has been serving as an Assistant Director of Special Education since July 2024, has quickly become a valued leader within the district.

Before stepping into administration, Shepard built more than a decade of classroom experience, serving as a special education teacher in the Longwood Central School District from 2014 to 2024, as well as teaching in Queens and Massapequa earlier in her career.

For Shepard, this new role is significant.

“Sachem will always be special to me because it’s where I was given my first opportunity as an administrator,” she said. “From day one, I’ve felt a strong sense of support and teamwork here. It’s a place that truly values growth for students and staff and encourages everyone to reach their potential.”

Shepard’s journey into education was shaped by her own experiences as a student.

“When I was young, school didn’t always come easily for me," she said. "My teachers were my role models. They were consistent, supportive, and genuinely cared. They made me feel seen and capable, and I wanted to be that same person for students who might be struggling.”

She added that administration gives her the chance to broaden her impact.

“Moving into administration has allowed me to make a difference not only for students, but also for the amazing teachers and staff who work with them every day.”

As she transitions into this expanded leadership role, Shepard says her focus will remain on inclusivity, support, and growth.

“My biggest goal is to keep learning and growing while creating a positive, inclusive environment,” she explained. “I’m especially passionate about supporting students with special needs and making sure every child feels they have the tools, opportunities, and encouragement they need to succeed.”

Relationship-building is another priority.

“For me, everything starts with trust and honesty. I work hard to be approachable and to really listen. I want people to know I hear them, value their input, and will follow through.”

Shepard notes that the most rewarding part of her role is seeing students succeed.

“Hands down, it’s hearing from parents about the progress their children are making. Knowing that the combined efforts of aides, teacher assistants, teachers, and administrators have made a real difference in a child’s life, that’s what it’s all about.”

She added that she’s proud to continue her work in a district so deeply committed to student success.

“I’m so proud to be part of a community that truly puts students first," she said. "I’m excited to keep working alongside such dedicated educators and families to help our students grow, thrive, and shine.”
