Nokomis Elementary School students are heart healthy this February. Students have raised more than $10,000 for the Kids Heart Challenge. The challenge encourages students to fundraise for the American Heart Association while learning how to take care of their hearts, bodies and brains along the way.

Nokomis Elementary School coordinator Taylor Starr hosted before-school yoga sessions to promote health habits and movement while students participated in the challenge. They started by reciting the mantra, “I am important, I am kind, I am smart, I am strong and I can do hard things.” Students then practiced different yoga poses and breathing techniques to relax their bodies before the start of the school day.

Students and staff across the Sachem Central School District celebrated P.S. I Love You Day on Feb. 9. Buildings across the district were decorated in purple as the Sachem community dressed in the color to spread the message of the annual day – to promote love, support and end the stigma surrounding mental health.

Students embraced Sachem’s Culture of Care through P.S. I Love You Day activities including writing kind notes to each other, creating displays of love and positivity to hang in the hallways and working with peer educators from both high schools. Additionally, several buildings held spirit weeks to kick off the P.S. I Love You Day festivities and bring school communities together.

First graders at Nokomis Elementary School are fostering their love for reading and art during the after-school Create a Craft Club. Led by Mrs. Zelazny, students come together weekly for an afternoon of fun and creativity. Students first read a book together, then create a craft based on what they read. Most recently, students made their own paper aliens after reading several of the “Aliens Love Underpants” books.
