Guidance Department
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Sachem Central School District Guidance Department! Our school counselors are focused on helping all students reach their full potential and pursue their passion. They have created a comprehensive K-12 program designed to assist all students in developing the skills needed to maximize their potential. Our school counselors take a proactive approach to working with students on the following topics:
- Academic planning and monitoring
- Individual and group guidance sessions
- Elementary School to Middle School Transition
- Middle School to High School Transition
- High School to Post-High School Transition (College, Career, Military, or Trade)
- Problem solving, decision making, crisis support and intervention
- College exploration and planning; including coordination of college representative visits
- Career and vocational planning
- Naviance program where important post-high school information is available to research
In addition, we host numerous workshops on weeknights and weekends throughout the year to address topics of vital importance. We are always evaluating our offerings to make sure we best meet the needs of the community. These workshops are available via livestream on the Sachem YouTube channel. These include:

- PSAT/ACT/SAT Workshops
- Athletic Recruiting Workshop for students interested in playing sports in college

Suffolk Community College Application Workshop: October 29, 2025 at East (Deadline 10/24)
New York State Colleges Waiving Application Fees in 2025:
- SUNY - October 20th - November 3rd (Apply to up to 5 campuses for free, including Suffolk Community College!)
- CUNY - November 10 to November 21 (Application waiver for all New York State public and private high schools)
- Independent NYS Colleges and Universities (various dates/campuses)
Course Withdrawal Policy: Students are permitted to withdraw from classes, without penalty, for the first 4 weeks of school. If a student chooses to withdraw after the 4-week window, they will receive a WP (Withdrawn Passing) or a WF (Withdrawn Failing) based on their grades at the time of withdrawal. The last day that students may request to withdraw from class, without penalty, is Monday October 6th, 2025. We will be strictly following these deadlines to maintain appropriate class sizes to continue to offer the wide variety of programs that we do.

- Naviance Scholarship Info - All national and regional (non-local) scholarships, as well as college specific scholarships are posted in Naviance for students and parents to access. If you do not know your username and password, contact your school counselor. Once logged into Naviance, click on “Colleges” then “Scholarship Search” under the Scholarships & Money category.

- Early College Program through Suffolk Community College: Interested in getting a jump start on college coursework? Eligible 11th and 12th graders can take college courses through the Early College Program at Suffolk County Community College. Rising 10th graders may enroll starting in the summer session.
