Athletics Department Unveils State-of-the-Art Fields

The Sachem Central School District Athletic Department is proud to unveil new turf baseball fields at Sachem High School East and Sachem High School North. District and building administrators joined both varsity baseball teams and coaches at their respective ribbon-cutting ceremonies to celebrate the opening of the fields.

“The creation of these fields have exceeded all expectations,” said Director of Athletics, Physical Education, Health and Health Services Gary Beutel. “They truly are state-of-the-art facilities, and the Sachem school district and community can look forward to using them for many years.”

The turf fields were approved by voters as part of a capital project proposition in 2023.

Turf Baseball Fields Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The athletic department would like to invite you to our New Turf Baseball Fields Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.

The Sachem North ceremony will take place on Tuesday, April 30 at 3 p.m., before the team's game vs North Babylon. The Sachem East ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 1 at 3 p.m. before the game vs Bay Shore.

Newsday Names Top Spring Student-Athletes

Sachem student-athletes are well-represented in Newsday’s lists of top high school players for the spring season!

Below is the text from Newsday for the respective sports:

Girls Lacrosse Top 100
Olannah Fikes, Sachem North, A, Sr.
Fikes finished with 28 goals and 13 assists. She is committed to Stony Brook.

Lisa Heffernan, Sachem North, M, Sr.
Heffernan finished with 22 goals and 11 assists. She is committed to Pace.

Girls Flag FB Top 30
Sofia Larrea, Sachem East, QB, Soph.
Larrea passed for 1,642 yards and rushed for 312 yards, leading Sachem to an 8-2-1 record.

Hailey Zambriski, Sachem North, RB/LB, Sr.
She was a leading defender with 37 flag pulls. She totaled 718 yards of total offense and nine touchdowns.

Baseball Top 100
Alex Apicella, Sachem East, SS/P, Sr.
Apicella batted .320 with five homers and 20 RBIs. The James Madison commit was 4-0 with 34 strikeouts and a 1.85 ERA.

Softball Top 100
Angie DeLuca, Sachem North, CF, Sr.
The St. Joseph’s (LI) commit batted .574 with 16 RBIs and scored 26 runs.

Olivia DeRose, Sachem East, P, Sr.
The Oswego commit struck out 136, earned nine wins, and had a 2.07 ERA.

Brooke Leach, Sachem North, C, Sr.
Leach is a strong defender with a powerful arm behind the plate. She hit .404, drove in 25 runs and scored 21.

Sachem Succeeds at the State and National Level

Sachem North Wrestling
With his third place finish in the Suffolk County tournament, Nate Gsell qualified for the NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championships in Albany on Feb. 23 and 24. Nate opened up the tournament with a victory by pin, but unfortunately dropped his next two matches and did not place. Nate was the only wrestler from Suffolk County to win a match at 215.

Sachem North Boys Track and Field
At the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships held at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island on March 2, Sachem North Senior Jack Riegger anchored the Section XI Intersectional Relay Team. Jack ran the 1600 in 4:31:05—his second-best indoor time of the season. When Riegger received the baton, Section XI was in ninth position, but he moved his team all the way up to 4th and a place on the All-State podium.

Sachem East Girls Track and Field
At the New York State Championship at Ocean Breeze, the East Girls Track Team had Seven young ladies earn All-State Honors. In the racewalk, sunior Gianna Mauri placed fifth and senior Danielle Chiarello placed sixth. The 4x400 relay team made up of junior Sarafina Scavo, senior Savanna Edwards, senior Lexi Martoscia, senior Taylor Percy and freshman Bella Galeas made the finals and finished eighth. Sachem did its part in helping the Section XI girls score the most points of any section in the state!

The East Girls Track Team also participated at Nike Nationals at the Armory. The 4x200 relay of Emma Ernst, Lexi Martoscia, Sarafina Scavo and Bella Galeas improved on their season best time, resetting the school record that was set last month. The race walk crew made up of Gianna Mauri (second place), Abby Callinan (fourth place), Danielle Chiarello (eighth place), Julianna Wottowa (ninth place), was tremendous. Based upon their performances, Gianna and Abby were both named All-Americans. Additionally, the 4x800 meter relay team of Sarafina Scavo, Savanna Edwards, Adriana Roa and Camryn Goodman, ran to a season best.

Sachem Boys Swimming
Brayden Savas had some great swims at the state meet in Ithaca. He swam the 100-yard butterfly and broke the school record from 1996 with a time of 51:51. He also swam the 200-yard individual medley, breaking the school record from 2022 with a time of 1:56.50.

Sachem Girls Bowling
Cira Arcangel was the anchor of the Section XI all-star team. She finished 11th overall individually in the whole tournament with a 205.5 average for six games. This was her third year in a row representing Sachem and Section XI at the state level. Section XI finished in second place this year at the tournament.
