Sachem students and staff celebrated Unity Day on Oct. 18. Aligned with National Bullying Prevention Month, Unity Day is celebrated around the globe and promotes joining together to create school communities that are kind, accepting and inclusive. Students across the district wore orange to show their support for Unity Day and create a visible message that they are standing up to bullying.

Several schools had students participate in activities to spread the messaging of Unity Day. At Sachem High School East, students took the pledge to stand together against bullying and wore orange ribbons in support. The building’s therapy dog, Bailey, was available for students to take photos with. Additionally, the sustainability club created a unity focal point at the building’s flagpole by decorating the area with orange-painted rocks that had messages of positivity.

At Seneca Middle School, every student wrote a kind message on a piece of orange paper which were then linked together to create a kindness chain. The chain is on display in the cafeteria to serve as a reminder of the meaning of Unity Day. Additionally, grade 6 students created a poster in their modern living classes with all of the ways they show unity.
