Students taking Life Design at Sachem High School North became published authors and illustrators after a collaborative effort to create a children’s alphabet book. Students were each assigned a letter of the alphabet and tasked with making an illustration based on a word that starts with their assigned letter. Each word also had to connect with the theme of the class. For example, “C” was for “Courage” and “D” was for “Dream.”
Once the books were complete, the class held a book publishing party to celebrate their success. They mingled with one another and reviewed their final product.
The Life Design course focuses on social and emotional learning. It helps students use art as an outlet, fosters creative and critical thinking, develops visual organizational skills and improves self-esteem through several wellness practices.
