This year our Club Fair was held on Monday September 22, 2008

 6th Grade Art Club/Advisor: Mr. Kreamer

Do you like to draw, paint, or just be creative? Then the Art Club is the club for you! Students have the opportunity to create projects outside of art class using various media. The 6th Grade Art Club gives any 6th grade student the opportunity to expand their art experience. They will learn new techniques and expand creativity through different projects that are not offered during the regular 6th grade curriculum.

 

7th & 8th Grade Art Club/Advisor: Mr. Lucas

Do you like to draw, paint, or just be creative? Then the Art Club is the club for you! Students have the opportunity to create projects outside of art class using various media such as murals, clay, paintings.

Battle of the Books/Advisor: Ms. Goldhammer

This activity has been organized to encourage and promote reading. The culmination of weekly preparatory club meetings will be for 12 team members to participate in a district-wide middle school competition, " Battle of the Books." During the competition, team members will be expected to answer questions about four books that they read and studied prior to the "battle."

Buddies Club/Advisors: Ms. Burns, Mr. Higgins, Ms. Scarola

The Buddies Club is a social club for students with and without intellectual disabilities. In this club, we do fun activities, games, sports, and music. We will meet once a month after school.

  Chess Club/Advisor: Mr. Williams

Students will be provided with a working knowledge of chess as well as some basic strategies of play. There will be practice and competitions each month and a playoff at the end of the year.

Class Book/Advisors: Ms. Murphy, Ms. Maione

This club puts together the yearbook that is handed out at the end of school. Students help decide the cover, layout, and design. If you are interested in computer work, digital photography, and graphic design (artwork on a computer), please join us.

The Consumer Cops/Advisor: Mr. McCaffrey

The consumer cops will be the eyes and ears for the students of Samoset who are tired of products that don't work. We will investigate products and services that kids use and rate them. We will conduct surveys on what the Samoset students like and hate about kid's products. We will create a newsletter reporting all our findings and ratings of products and services. Sample projects include:

  • Coke vs. Pepsi
  • Bottled Water vs. the school fountain
  • Holiday toys
  • Ways kids can make money
  • The best fast-food fries

Digital Photography Club/Advisor: Mr. Lux

Students will explore the media of Digital Graphic Technology:

  • Will learn how to use 35mm digital SLR
  • Will learn how to use good photographic composition
  • Will learn how images are down-loaded from camera to computer
  • Will explore photographic editing through the use of software (Photoshop)
  • Will explore video photography

Drama Club/Advisors: Mr. Lucas and Ms. Schaefer

This year's musical will spotlight the many talents of Samoset's 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Its purpose is to educate, as well as entertain. Auditions will be held the first week of November and will consist of singing a Broadway show tune, from a show NOT currently running, which means you have to find a good song from the PAST! Our performances are held in March. Rehearsal schedule will be posted after auditions.

Greenhouse Club/Advisor: Mr. Lucas

Through the use of Samoset's greenhouse and courtyard area, students will grow plants to help beautify the school community. They will cultivate and maintain Samoset's garden memorials, maintain the courtyard pond and care for its creatures. Students will learn about planting techniques and environmental issues.

 Helping Hands Club/Advisor: Ms. Stolte

Students will become involved in community service and helping others around the community. Activities may include toy/food/clothing drives, visits to local nursing homes after school, bake sales/fundraisers for organizations in need, such as those who recently survived the hurricane in Texas.

  History Team/Advisor: Mr. Hooker

The History Team competes against other schools in a Jeopardy/college bowl like setting. Students will have been given a series of topics to research and study for each month's meet. The team sits at a table of seven players per table. The meet is played in a number of rounds with the team scoring the most points pronounced the winner. There is one meet per month so it does NOT require a significant amount of 'after-school' time.

Home & Careers Club/Advisor: Ms. Melito

The Home & Careers Club will have a variety of activities included at our meetings. We will be doing cooking projects, craft projects, and sewing projects. This club will be open to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Check out some examples during the club fair. See Ms. Melito if you have any questions.

 

Horsemanship Club/Advisor: Ms. Curry

This club will help you to discover the world of horses. We will learn about breeds, behavior, the important role of horses in American and world history, care, showing, and riding. We will be reading fictional and non-fictional books on horses.

Literary Magazine/Advisors: Ms. Anziano, Ms. Guarino, Ms. Schuster

The Literary Magazine is a club that is dedicated to publishing the creative works of Samoset's talented students. It is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Either join as a club member or plan on submitting your writing or artwork.

Newspaper/Advisors: Ms. Murphy, Ms. Gieck

Extra! Extra! Read all about Samoset's many activities. Students are needed to help write, edit, and design the school's newspaper.

 Peer Tutoring/Advisor: Ms. Gieck

This club provides an opportunity for students to help one another in academic areas, while getting service hours. Peer tutors must have a consistently strong grade in the subject area for which they are volunteering. Tutoring sessions occur mainly during the student lunch periods.

 Relay for Life Team/Advisors: Ms. Tirado, Mr. Nardolillo

The Relay for Life Team is made up of 15 students who are dedicated to raising money for the American Cancer Society. Our team raises money for the Society during the school year by holding bake sales, car washes, and participating in a variety of other activities. The students are invited to participate at the Relay for Life, which is an overnight event held in the beginning of June. The overnight relay includes walking for cancer research and celebrating the lives of survivors and loved ones who lost the battle with cancer. Please note that students need to have an adult chaperone with them at the time of the Relay for Life event in June.

 

Renaissance Club/Advisors: Ms. Cody, Ms. Francois

Renaissance is primarily a community service club. The club will meet once a month. Some of the activities we will be doing include: Valentine's Day fundraiser, creating bulletin boards, creating a club banner, and helping out with school-wide fundraisers during lunch periods. All members of the club need to hold an updated Renaissance card.

 

Scrabble Club/Advisor: Ms. Shivers SCRABBLE

Scrabble Club is so much fun!! We learn new words all the time as we're competing with each other to win in singles or in teams. Come join us - You'll be glad you did!!!!

 Scrapbook Club/Advisors: Ms. Santucci, Ms. Gunther

If you like to preserve your memories through photographs, journaling, stickers, quotes, and decorations, then the Scrapbook Club may be for you. Come join us as we find creative ways to help you make your own scrapbook or memory book. Some supplies and a small fee will be required.

 Select Chorus/Advisor: Ms. Kasper

Select Chorus is an audition-based advanced chorus. Select Chorus is for 7th and 8th grade advanced singers.

Stagecraft Club/Advisor: Mr. Beyer

Volunteers in this club will help Mr. Beyer build props and sets for the school play in March. The Stagecraft Club does not begin until January 2008. Come sign up now, though. Experience in technology and the use of tools and machines is helpful.

6th Grade Technology Club/Advisor: Mr. Beyer

Students will be introduced to the concept of using tools and materials to build small projects related to new and old technology. Some problem-solving thinking will be used to help students become technologically literate with today's world. Students will do model rocketry, build some small crafts, and have the opportunity to build some personal projects with the submission of project plans.

7th & 8th Grade Technology Club/Advisor: Mr. Beyer

 

Students will be introduced to the concept of using tools and machines to build projects related to new and old technology. Some problem-solving thinking will be used to help students become technologically literate with today's world. Projects are slightly more advanced than 6th Grade Technology Club. A catapult competition will be organized for a Spring competition against the other districts' Middle Schools. We will also possibly have the opportunity to experiment with the Suffolk County Lego League.

Treble Choir/Advisor: Ms. Kasper

Treble Choir is an audition-based advanced girls' chorus. This is open to 7th and 8th grade advanced female singers.

Webslingers/Advisor: Mr. Saccullo

This club meets every other week. We will be looking at new technology and building our own websites. This year we will be working with:

  • PhotoStory 3 for Windows to build movies with still photos and music
  • Windows Movie Maker to create movies with video, still photos and music
  • Building Websites using Publisher and the new Google Sites and have our own site on the web in minutes!!
  • We will create our own Webslingers Blog and website.
  • Create your very own iGoogle page
