Early College Awareness Week @ Samoset Middle School

Can you name all 8 Ivy League Colleges? Many students at Samoset Middle School can! Samoset held their first Early College Awareness Week March 31 st through April 4 th, 2008. Students were introduced to various college terms and the college application process and requirements. They also learned how their achievements and experiences in middle school relate to high school and college success.

Daily activities included College Shirt Day, College Trivia, a College Mascot Matching Game and a College Experience Scavenger Hunt. Students interviewed teachers regarding their college experience and learned why their teachers chose specific colleges, what they majored in and what activities they participated in while attending college.

Counselors Lisa Carlen, Kathy Morgillo and Melissa Capuano organized and implemented grade level activities in classrooms throughout the week. The 6 th grade learned many college terms and played College Bingo. 7 th graders played college Jeopardy, an interactive Power point presentation, created by Samoset’s counselors with the assistance of Business teacher, Keith McCaffrey and Samoset’s 6 th grade Gifted and Talented classes. The 8 th grade classes reviewed a High School transcript and played I-Spy College Terms and a College Terms Word-search Game.

Hundreds of prizes, donated by colleges throughout the nation, were awarded to students throughout the week. The faculty enjoyed sharing information about their college experience while students eagerly and actively participated in all the classroom and building activities. One day Samoset students will not only be learning about Ivy League colleges, but attending them.
