SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS

Social Studies Summer Assignments

AP courses are academically rigorous and challenging. They will motivate you to explore new ideas and enhance your skills in analysis and critical thinking. We want you to be successful. If you have registered for Advanced Placement course(s) in Social Studies you may be required to complete summer assignment for the course(s) that you are taking in 2010-11. We want you to feel prepared for your class and less pressured during the first weeks of the AP courses.

English Summer Reading Overview (below):

Sachem Summer Reading Overview

Goals:

  • Prepare students to become lifelong readers and appreciate literature outside the classroom.
  • Explore personal preferences in literature/genre by identifying, selecting, and evaluating books on an age appropriate level.
  • React to reading through activities designed by teachers through the summer and upon return to school.
  • Engage students to become active and positive participants of their own education.

Summer Reading Requirements 9 – 12

  1. You are required to read one book and return to school with a summer reading document/parent—guardian verification form.  Current English classroom teachers will give out the documents in June.  These documents will be collected and graded by all future teachers in September.  In the event that you misplace a packet, the forms may be downloaded from the Sachem High School websites.
  2. Books can be from any genre, but suggestion lists will be provided below and are posted on our district website.
  3. The Sachem Public library has been notified of this district initiative and is prepared to help in any way possible.  Please see Mrs. Sue Tychnowitz in the Young Adult literature section for further assistance.
  4. We encourage you to choose your own title to read.  Read what interests you!  However, if no book is found independently, books will be made available by grade level by the district to sign out:

For students going into 9th Grade – Text – The Pigman

For students going into10th Grade – Text – Tuesdays with Morrie

For students going into 11th Grade – Text – The Five People You Meet in Heaven

For students going into 12th Grade – Text—student choice

These books are available through current classroom teachers or through the Sachem North Main Office

  1. Aside from the completed packet, students are expected to contribute to various teacher requirements upon their return to school in September.
