Sachem High School East science teacher Richard Lemke is one of five finalists for the title of 2008 New York State Teacher of the Year. Following an initial application process in which he received the support of colleagues, administrators, students, parents and community leaders, Mr. Lemke was observed in the classroom by a member of the New York State Teacher of the Year selection committee, who then interviewed all of the above-mentioned candidate support groups. Mr. Lemke then traveled to Albany for an interview with the selection committee. The entire Sachem East community is very proud of Mr. Lemke’s designation as a finalist in this prestigious recognition. |
| THE INTERACT VOLUNTEER CLUB |
|
CONGRESSMAN TIM BISHOP |
| THE INTERACT VOLUNTEER CLUB recently took a trip to Niagara State Park with 42 of its members and Rich Lemke, Jason Toto, and Rich Gearns. They participated in a park clean-up project and dedicated a park bench in the club’s name. They also toured the famous Robert Moses Hydro-electric Power Plant associated with Niagara Falls. The picture on the right is of the group getting an up-close view of the Falls. In the words of Interact Volunteer Club Publicity Director Lindsey Oro, “To say we got soaked was an understatement.” |

Tim Bishop addressed the students of Nick Antonucci’s AP Government and Politics class on October 2nd, moments before he boarded a plane to Washington D. C. to vote on the controversial “bail out” legislation. Congressman Bishop spoke about his view of the recent economic turmoil and the role of government. The students asked numerous questions about the legislation and how it would impact them and future generations. Congressman Bishop complimented the students on their depth of knowledge and encouraged everyone who was eligible, to exercise their right to vote. |
| NATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP |

SCIENCE RESEARCH |
| THE NATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM recognized Sachem East student Vivian Emengo as an Outstanding Participant for her score on the 2008 PSAT exam. Vivian’s score placed her in the top 4% of all black students who took the exam. Please congratulate Vivian on this tremendous accomplishment when you see her. |

SCIENCE RESEARCH student William Marsiglia won the Arthritis Foundation Summer Student Fellowship last year. The $2000 fellowship was awarded to only six researchers and William was the only high school student among the six. This past summer he worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory under the guidance of mentor scientist Dr. Peter Thanos of the BNL Medical Department and Sachem East science research teacher Dr. Michael Vaccariello. His research focused on dopamine receptors and the immune system. William wants to pursue neuroscience in college, possibly at Cornell University. Congratulations. |
| FERMI NATIONAL ACCELERATOR |
|
THE GSA |
| FERMI NATIONAL ACCELERATOR LABORATORY in Chicago played host to a group of high school students and staff including Sachem East physics teachers Carl Erickson and Rich Gearns and student Akshay Gupta. The group was on hand to witness the Large Hadron Collider, the world’s most powerful atom smasher located in Switzerland, pass its first test by successfully circulating proton beams for the first time. This historic event was celebrated at Fermi by more than 300 people where they had direct contact with scientists at the collider in Switzerland. Rich Gearns was quoted in Newsday, who covered the event, as saying “I wanted to teach the students not only about physics, but about where the world is going.” |

THE GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE recently celebrated Ally Week. As you can see in the picture, many students signed-up to pledge on October 15th Ally Day, that they will help to make school a safe and supportive place for all students. Kudos to Sachem East guidance counselors Wendy Corrigan and David Sheehan for organizing the very successful event and making Sachem East a great place to go to school for all of our students. Sachem East senior Peter Ramirez also deserves special recognition for founding the club last year. |
| Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy |
|
|
DARIUS GOES WEST AT SACHEM EAST On Friday, October 17th, Darius Weems, now 19 years old, touched the hearts of students and raised awareness for a debilitating form of muscular dystrophy. Darius and his production crew of college students made a surprise visit to Sachem East. Joining Darius was Javier, an adorable 4 year old also afflicted with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). The film, “Darius Goes West” was shown in Health Education classes prior to the assembly presentation. In depth health discussion of the film laid important ground–work for developing empathy skills when considering tolerance, caregiver issues, and application of the American’s with Disabilities Act. It was evident from Darius’ overwhelming reception, that his message will be indelibly engrained in the hearts and minds of our students. As one student so eloquently wrote in class: “Through Darius’ struggle living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a terminal condition, people are exposed to the magnitude of others’ hardships and are able to understand how minute the nuisances that they complain about tend to be.”
