Teens as Teachers Club
The Teens as Teachers club took a field trip on October 28th which was hosted by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. The topic of the event was “Learn to Be Tobacco Free”. The students were trained to teach people about the harms of tobacco and will speak with students in the middle and elementary schools over the next few weeks. They are currently working on lesson plans and producing a video for this purpose. Ms. Connors and Mrs. Broderick are the advisors of this conscientious and productive group.
Mentoring Program
Our Mentoring Program advisors, Ms. Corrigan and Ms. MacLellan, organized Sachem East’s annual Match Day which took place on October 29th. The event involved a luncheon and getting-to-know you activities. It was a fun event and a great start for the mentoring relationships. Many thanks go out to all the teachers who volunteer their time to help these students.
Boat Launch
Bob Wentzel’s “Boat Launch” took place on October 15th. The students have been building cardboard boats in his technology classes while learning about buoyancy, water displacement, stability and waterproofing. The students were required to construct a boat that enabled them to paddle across the school’s swimming pool. Both Band his students had a great time seeing the result their hard work.
Project Challenge
On October 30th students and teachers gathered to share past experiences and lessons they have learned in life. These discussions proved to break down barriers between students and helped them realize how similar they all are. The event provided a
great opportunity for students to develop better relationships with each other and faculty members. Mrs. Leblanc and the Peer Educators helped organize the event.
SADD
The Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) club helped us realize how many lives are lost from drunk driving accidents throughout the day. Students that were designated as “deceased” had their faces painted white and were not allowed to speak. Organized by Melanie Akerberg, we were able to see how many lives are affected by these horrible accidents. Mr. Manning, Melanie Akerberg, and the students involved in this awareness day pose in front of a van that was involved in an actual drunk-driving accident.
