COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Keyboarding for College & Beyond (9-12)
Semester & Alternating—1/2 credit

Can you type as fast as you IM? Given the ever increasing use of computers in school and business, keyboarding is essential to a student’s academic life and future career opportunities. This course enables students to learn the touch system of keyboarding and apply these skills in the latest word processing applications. Students will develop accurate skills using self-paced “Microtype Pro” software. Students will be engaged in projects to create essential business and personal documents to solve problems and complete tasks effectively and with efficiency. Keyboarding for College and Beyond is a much needed technology skill to enhance academic achievement, open the door to basic computer application courses, and a lifelong personal and workplace skill.

Business Technologies & Projects (9-12)
Level I & Level II—Semester—1/ 2 credit

Students may take this course two times for credit.
Level 1: Students choose two options from the first four
choices below.
• Note the Prerequisite for Microsoft Word II.
• Note that Business Presentations can only be taken in Level II.
Level 2: Students choose two different options from the five
choices below.
Microsoft Word II—Self-paced software instruction of advanced word processing applications ending with a comprehensive business-related project. Prerequisite: Keyboarding for College & Beyond
PowerPoint—Self-paced software instruction of this graphics presentation program. Student will research a topic of their choice, synthesize the information, and create a PowerPoint presentation utilizing the multiple features of the program.
Excel—Self-paced software instruction of this spreadsheet program used for analyses and graphing of numerical data. Student will complete a project analyzing data, organizing the data, and creating charts to display data in an effective manner.
Publisher—Self-paced software instruction of this desktop publishing program. Student will be engaged in a project to design and create advertising/marketing materials that are effective in informing and attracting business customers.
Business Presentations—Level II only--utilizing components of Microsoft Office, students will analyze a business communication situation, develop a presentation strategy, create documents and present the information in a professional manner.

College Accounting (11 & 12)
Full Year—1 credit

Planning on majoring in accounting or business management in college? There is always a need for accountants in the job market. Get your foundation now with this college-level accounting course designed for the motivated student. The topics covered are those in a college introductory course. No previous accounting course is required. Students will learn to tackle the requirement of a college course. Information will be applied in a variety of novel situations. Current computer software applications will also be utilized for various projects and simulations. Upon successful completion of course requirements and tuition payment, students may receive 3 college credits from LIU/C. W. Post. This course also qualifies for the Dowling Dual Credit Program.

Business Law (11 & 12)
Full Year—1 credit

Did you know that at the age of 18 you are responsible for your contractual obligations? This course is vital for graduating seniors and is designed for college-bound students. Students will learn and apply the fundamental principles behind law that involves an individual’s personal and work life. This course will explore legal issues such as employment law, real estate (property law), corporate law, and contract law with the use of the internet. Good reading comprehension is essential. After completion of this course, students will have the knowledge to take the Notary Public exam. Upon successful completion of course requirements and tuition payment, students may receive 3 college credits from LIU/C. W. Post. This course also qualifies for the Dowling Dual Credit Program.

College Marketing & Advertising (11 & 12)
Semester—1/2 credit

Marketing is the most dynamic area of the world of business and a popular college Business major! Explore the psychology of creating, promoting and selling goods and services. Learn the art of promotion by engaging in marketing research and identification, product design, store display and advertising. Learn how major stores such as Abercrombi & Fitch target customers and develop marketing strategies for those customers. Current events, trends and case studies will be integrated and evaluated throughout the classroom discussions. The course will culminate with the creation of a marketing plan and presentation for a product or service. This course is also the foundation course for our school’s DECA chapter, a co-curricular national marketing association. Students are encouraged to join and participate.
Upon successful completion of course requirements and tuition payment, students may receive 3 college credits from LIU/C. W. Post. This course also qualifies for the Dowling Dual Credit Program.

Sports & Entertainment Management (10-12)
Alt—1/2 credit

Imagine yourself owning a Pro Team, producing a movie or your favorite recording artist! Would you like to be responsible for running Madison Square Garden or Yankee Stadium? Learn how teams and recording artists are managed within today’s dynamic business world. Management principles will be used to explore these exciting industries with emphasis on such topics as collective bargaining, contracts, and sports/entertainment law. Students will analyze the various teams and leagues in the metropolitan area and apply this knowledge to assisting the management of our school’s teams and programs. Students will also learn to market various entertainment businesses and apply this knowledge to assist the management of our school’s events. Human resources, ethics and social responsibility, as well as human, public, and media relations will be studied within the global context of the sports and entertainment industry. Interactive team projects, guest speakers, and field trips to MSG, MTV and Yankee Stadium will enhance the classroom learning. A field practicum may be arranged for each student to assist the management of a school team or school event.
This course qualifies for the Dowling Dual Credit Program.

Wallstreet: Investments (10-12)
Sem –1/2 credit

Do you want to be a millionaire? This course is designed for students with a serious interest in business, finance and economic studies at the college level. The study of investments in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, 401 (k) plans as retirement options, and real estate will give the student an insight into economic reality. The student will also discover the career opportunities in the financial service industries. The use of current events is stressed and applied to the challenges of investing. Along with practical investment management techniques, an investment simulation will be utilized to provide real-world experience in effective money management and investment portfolios.

Career & Financial Management (9-12)
Sem/Alt—1/2 credit

Ever picture yourself behind the wheel of your favorite car and wonder how you would ever be able to afford it? Discover the skills of budgeting and managing your money so you can pay your daily expenses and buy that favorite car. This course gives you the skills of budgeting your money, getting the most for your dollar, savings and checking accounts, balancing your accounts, owning a home versus renting an apartment, making sound financial decisions and discovering the world of insurance for your: auto, home, health, disability and life. Through the use of a simulation, learn how to make our economy work for you. Also, discover your job readiness skills and how they relate to the career opportunities in today’s workplace. This course can be taken as an elective but it is a required course for every Career and Technical Education (CTE) program.

E-Business & Entrepreneurship—(10-12)
FY-–1 credit

How would you like to be your own boss or learn how a business operates? Would you like to learn how to use the internet to run or enhance a business? More and more Americans are finding ways to start and succeed in their own small business—a great 21st century career opportunity. Using a new exciting interactive website program called “ScoresUp.com,” students will develop comprehensive business plans to sell a product or service using marketing, merchandising and management skills. Using the internet, E-Business concepts and strategies will be thoroughly explored. Students will create a business and gain a solid foundation in the entrepreneurial concept that can be applied to entry level employment after high school or enrich college-level study.

Office Work Experience (9-12) FY/ Semester/ Alternating
     • Full year—1 credit
     • One semester—1/2 credit
     • Full year/ alternating days—1/2 credit
Pre-requisite: Assistant Principal recommendation. Students will experience an “on the job” work experience while assisting in various offices of the school. Work experience students are assigned to a specific supervisor who will assign various tasks relevant to that office. Office Work Experience assistants will be expected to develop the work habits that are required of all employees in the work world--good attendance, punctuality, responsibility, dependability, and a positive work attitude/ethic. These skills will play an important role as students seek part- or full-time employment. The student is responsible for completing the assignments and is evaluated by the supervisor in the attainment of work-related skills. The course requirements are: satisfactory completion of assigned tasks, satisfactory supervisor evaluation, and satisfactory attendance. Assistants will be evaluated each quarter and will be graded on a P/F basis. Excellent attendance is essential and students can be dropped for attendance/behavior violations. Business courses are not required for this course. Students may only sign up for a maximum of 1 credit of Office Work Experience during high school.

On The Job Work Experience (10, 11 & 12—Age 16+)
Ready to try out the world of work with a paid job or an internship? Students enrolled in coursework in Business (including Office Work Experience), Family & Consumer Sciences or Technology Departments can earn credit for supervised jobs outside of the school day. This course provides students the opportunity to learn, apply, and enhance the job readiness skills necessary to be successful in the workplace. Members of the business community, school personnel and the student develop a supervised training plan. _ credit will be awarded for 150 hours of approved, supervised work and 1 credit will be awarded for 300 hours of approved, supervised work per school year.

THE FIVE CREDIT BUSINESS SEQUENCE
  Students who complete a five credit Business Sequence for a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation will be exempt from the three credit second language mandate. Students selecting this sequence must pass:
