Principal’s Message

Cayuga Elementary School

Dear Students, Parents, and Community Members,

Welcome to Cayuga Elementary School’s website!  I am very proud to be the principal of this fine school.  The teachers and staff at Cayuga have a truly spectacular reputation for promoting a love of learning among the students.

Cayuga Elementary School hosts kindergarten through fifth grade and educates approximately 660 students from the communities of Lake Grove and Lake Ronkonkoma.  With a combined focus in the academic areas as well as the arts, Cayuga graduates move onto Samoset Middle School as well-rounded learners.  Through a challenging curriculum and high expectations for all, we strive to help each and every student be the very best they can be.

I hope this issue of the Cayuga Chatter finds all of you well after what was certainly a winter for the books!  Hats off to our fine Custodial Staff as well as the Sachem Grounds Crew for working many long hours after each of the winter storms to ensure that our school and the surrounding property was safe for our students.  In addition, I’d also like to thank all of our parents and guardians for carefully navigating our parking lot during these past few difficult months.  As many of you noticed, losing “the hill” for parking because of all the snow certainly posed some challenges during our arrivals, dismissals and many school events.  Thank you for your patience and for your assistance in keeping everyone safe!

As usual, we have had a lot of excitement here at Cayuga.  The circus act was a huge success that students enjoyed in an assembly format.  “iGame4” visited us the week of March 7th and took over our gym, demonstrating to students how video games can be used as a resource for exercise.  While the students had a blast all week, a PTA Family Night was also held to provide parents with an opportunity to see firsthand how playing video games doesn’t have to necessarily entail inactivity.

March 22nd through 24th marks COGAT Testing for 2nd Grade.  This test is used to assess students’ abilities in reasoning and problem solving using verbal, quantitative and nonverbal (spatial) symbols.  May 4th- 6th marks our New York State English Language Arts Assessment dates for all students in grades three through five.  During May 11th – 13th, all students in these grades will also take the New York State Mathematics Assessment.  If you have any questions about any of these assessments, please contact your child’s teacher.

Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, May 17th, which marks our Annual Health & Nutrition Fair.  This year is sure to be our best yet.  In addition to many wonderful activities and vendors, for the first time we are welcoming New York Vein Care who will be offering free cardiovascular risk screenings.  As well as an overall risk assessment, you will also receive ultrasound results for immediate feedback.  We encourage you to attend this year’s fair to take advantage of this and many other wonderful opportunities.

As the weather continues to get warmer, please remember to dress your child appropriately for school.  This includes wearing clothing that fits comfortably, as well as refraining from wearing flip-flops for safety reasons.  Also, please  take some time to reinforce the importance of following the “Safe Play on the Playground” policy which was sent home earlier this school year.  This will help to ensure that all students have a safe and enjoyable experience during recess.

As always, I thank you for your time, energy and commitment to working together to provide Cayuga’s wonderful children with the best education possible!  Please know that as the building principal, I am here to answer any questions you may have about our school.  Feel free to contact our main office at (631) 471-1800 or email me at mwells@sachem.edu.

Sincerely,

Matthew P. Wells
