Parallel Search Engines


Make your search of the internet easier by using a parallel search engine instead of an individual search engine.  A parallel search engine searches multiple search engines simultaneously and returns the results in one list.  Duplicate hits are eliminated.  Try the great sites listed below!

Google ( Excellent educational resources. Maps of specified places. Dictionary definitions of words. Image Search.

Mamma ( searches the following search  engines:  Yahoo, Excite, InfoseekWebCrawler, AltaVista, and 
Dogpile ( searches Yahoo, Thunderstone, Lycos' A2Z,, Mining Co., ExciteGuide, PlanetSearch, What U Seek, Magellan, Lycos, WebCrawler, InfoSeek, Excite, and AltaVista

AltaVista ( Good for multimedia searches, but beyond that better search tools are available elsewhere.

Ask Jeeves (  uses natural language and provides a list of answers with their exact location. Ask Jeeves searches the five most powerful search engines. Best when you're beginning research on a large topic. Good way of locating a few good sites. If you're trying to locate something more specific, this is not the tool for you.

Metacrawler ( is the default search engine for The Reference Desk ( the page which opens at the South Library when you connect to the Internet.  Metacrawler searches InfoSeek, WebCrawler, Excite, Yahoo, Looksmart, Lycos and Mining Company.

Query Server ( is an advanced meta search tool that broadcasts a single query across a set of Web-enabled search engines. It can search web search engines, news and TV sites, health and medical sites, financial sites, and US federal government sites.

Yahoo ( is a search directory. Search or browse by various categories. 

Yahooligans ( Yahoo's search engine for kids. Also contains web sites and activities arranged by categories. 

Grokker ( This search engine displays results visually. Visual search is an answer to the challenge of getting students to go beyond the ‘top ten’ habit that is instilled by internet searches, and really expose the depth and quality that is present in EBSCO’s offerings. Results are presented in either outline or map views
Pixsy ( Search millions of video and images by category, and from sources including viddler, webshots and youtube.
