JANUARY 31, 2012 ALUMNI UPDATE

Hi Alumni –
It’s been a long time – many of our alumni are enjoying great indoor seasons at college and some more are successful in post-college running careers.  We have some MORE IMPORTANT business to get to right away though before some more traditional highlights.  Please read the letter I received earlier today from 2006 alum Jenn Patti below:

Hello Mr.Young!

Hope you are doing great! I was wondering if you wouldn't mind spreading some news for me through the alumni online website/e-mail list-serv. I was recently nominated as a finalist for a free wedding through a radio station on Long Island! I was wondering if you could go to the link below and vote for Jesse Brawley and I! It would mean so much to us! You can vote up to one time/day on your computer and phone! Voting ends the night of February 17th! Please share with your family and friends :)

Thank you for your support!!

Jenn Patti

Vote for Jenn!!  You can read the rest of this update later.

For those who don’t know Jenn, she was a four year member of our spring track and field teams.  Jenn sprinted with our teams.  She possesses one of the top-5 most beautiful smiles in team history!  Jenn ran a senior season-best 15.8 in the 100 m. dash.  While we’re at it, her is the rest of the 100 m. field at our May 4, 2006 Senior Day Meet versus Walt Whitman:

This was a fun meet result to look at.  Many of our frosh-soph sprinters this year would move up to middle distance/distance events over the next two years.  Our senior class was smaller than usual in 2006 but very accomplished and a key part of our post-Split rebuilding.  Class of 2006 alumni include Megan Donlevy, Captain karyn Geoghan, Captain Kiki Johnson, Captain Kelly Lang, Danielle LaRuffa (“LaRuffa’s on fire!”), Nicole Medici, Nazish Mehdi, Kaitlyn McKenna, Jenn Patti, Michelle Stack.

Maria Michta continues training for 2012 Olympic trials.  See her web site at www.mariamichta.com.  While you’re at it, join our alumni facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/groups/203375736407338/.

Congratulations to Jess (Chetuck) Pereira (Class of ’01).  She and husband Vic had Baby #2, Trevor Charles, on August 24th, weighing in at 8 lbs. 8 oz.  Trevor and big brother Colton are going to be best friends - especially since they're only 13 months apart.

Congratulations to Jess (Nazario) Fener.  Jess (Class of ’00) and hubby Zach welcomed son Jeremy William Fener into the world and the Nazario-Fener clans on August 26.  Jeremy weighed in at a health 8 lbs. 15 oz and at a height of 21.5”.

Below is a note I wrote to Ali Bourgal (’03) after she completed the diva half-marathon in October along with Ali’s response.

Hi Ali,
Congratulations to you and your fellow Diva Half Marathoners! I'm proud to know the fastest Diva 13.1 miler in Farmingville (I look up these things, you know.). Congratulations to fellow Sachem Divas Spatz-erooni, Victoria and Brenda Genoino. You can pass "Way to go, Princess!" messages to any or all.
We will not be at Connetquot Trails next Sunday (meet day for North and East). I hope I get a chance to here some race details soon, Ali.
Alex

Good morning!!! Thank you!!! It was actually REALLY fun! I never thought I was going to enjoy it as much as I did. I felt great running and I was able to run a little faster the last mile....maybe because I was wearing a crown and pink feathers!! Today my legs feel like they are going to fall off though! I wanted to thank you for helping me train and for giving me some good advice! I want to keep running on Sunday's whenever I can!! Enjoy the week and thank you again!
Ali Bourgal (10/3/11)

Hope you have enjoyed the mild winter as much as the North and East winter track and field teams.  See you in the updates!

Alex

Hi Alumni:
How time flies! Last update celebrated the graduation of North and East’s Class of 2011. Here we are near mid-semester and a lot of updates to share. Before we get to alumni, a quick congratulations to future alumni Kelly Lavan (N ’13) and Rachel Paul (E ’12). Both harriers set home XC course records last week. Rachel broke her own course record at East as she ran a 19:25. Kelly broke Jen Modzel’s 2003 course record at North with a 20:02. While Kelly’s time is a Sachem record, the overall North course record belongs to Mary Kate Anselmini of Ward Melville (set last year).

Go Bearly Runners!

If you ever get a chance, be sure to run the Ocean to Sound Relay. Many Sachem alumni have done so. The Bearly Runners team made up of many Sachem alumi ran the 8 person team, 50 mile course on Sunday, Sept. 25. Kaitlin (N ’05), Renee (’05) and Allison (’00) Fallier, Meaghan N ’02) and Caitlin Doran (N ’05) and 2 other awesome and spirited runners made themselves known to all as they decked out the Bear-mobile, made signs, dressed up and cheered for everyone (including me when I ran along with Kaitlin for a short part of her l3g 4 of the race) and made the post-race party the grrrr-eatest post-race party in Ocean to Sound history.

I think Kaitlin’s words sum up the Bearly experience best:
Mr. Young,
We made it!! (BEARLY haha) And we didn't even come in last! The Bears had an absolute blast. We were kind of famous at the post-race party. Multiple people came and told us how great/enthusiastic we were and thanked us for cheering for them. The Bear Mobile cheered on every runner it passed for 50 miles, whether they were in the race or not! Thanks again for coming out to support the BEARLY Runners (and for distracting me from how miserable that first part of my leg was- I cruised through the hills in the latter half!)!! We're already planning next year's costumes. :)
Kaitlin
Pictures below of the Bearly Runners including one with me and 3 of the Bearlys taken in Old Bethpage.

Congratulations again Bearly Runners. I’ll be on the course again next year cheering for the Next Edition Bears!

By the way, Coach Pete McNeill also ran Ocean to Sound with the Super Runners Shop team. He and the Bearly Runners exchanged enthusiastic greetings when they saw each other. Coach Mc. was not dressed up like a bear but I bet he wished he was!

Congratulations to Sachem track & Field alum Jen Villa (N ’04) on running the Hamptons Half Marathon in 2 hours 35 minutes on 9/24. Jen ran in support of Leukemia and Lymphoma's Team-In-Training. You can support Jen’s fund-raising efforts by going to the following link:

http://pages.teamintraining.org/nyc/hampton11/jvilla16ce

Teresa Kuehhas (’04) ran the Tunnel to Tower 5K on 9/15 with thousands of runners to honor 9-11 heroes.

The Sachem XC Challenge was held on August 27 as Hurricane Irene threatened Farmingville and the rest of the Northeast. Light rainfall began as the race was underway, but all were home safely long before the real stuff blew through. Alumni Caitlyn Ryan, Ally and Lauren Waka and Mary Cipriano were among the fearless runners who ran the race on Sachem East’s always challenging 5K course.

Sachem alumni are tearing it up in XC season at many colleges. Mary Cipriano, Lauren and Ally Waka, Jenessa Donovan, Bridget McNamara and Caitlyn Ryan are helping St. Joseph’s XC team to what may be its greatest season ever. Caitlyn was named Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week on 9/12. With 5 North and 1 East alumni on the current roster, Sachem alumni make up one-third of the Golden Eagle roster. 14 th season coach Jim Crowley (a good friend of Sachem) is delighted to have some of Sachem’s best-ever on his squad. Below are some recent times for Sachem alumni at their respective colleges:

JUNE 25, 2011 UPDATE

Hi Alumni:
This alumni update is special as we include the Class of 2011 as part of our Sachem XC and Track & Field Alumni. The Class of 2011 has achieved a great deal of success at Sachem North and East. The East squad has been part of Sachem East’s outstanding success in League 1 and 2 and on the County level for four straight years. The North squad has been part of its teams’ success ever since the group won the Freshman Championship at the 2008 Frosh-Soph meet.
Brittany Christensen (East) has been one of Long Island’s top throwers for much of her track and field career. Brittany capped off her outstanding career with a county championship in shotput in her final (spring) season and a trip to States and Nationals. Kayla Cataldo (North) capped off her final season with her third pole vault county title and an exciting series of vaults at the NYS Championship Meet. East’s All-County Alyssa Genduso may be the most successful multi-event athlete produced in East’s track and field history, North’s Keira Wood has achieved marks in distances from 600 to 100 meters only surpassed by Sachem legends Jeanna Composti (’99) and Shannon Weeks (’96) in the past quarter century. Keira also set two school records on a memorable day at the Armory in January. Ashley Ayers (East) was a key part of East’s record-setting 4x400 relay in her senior year. North’s Stephanie Richer had a breakout senior spring season in which she scored 50 dual meet points in the team’s five dual meets in the toughest league in Suffolk County.

There is a great deal more that both North and East teams achieved with their respective talented senior squads. For instance, Megan Walsh and Krystle Grygo provided strong leadership as well as memorable performances for four years at East. North senior hurdlers Samantha Swift, Krystal Cheng and Mishaina Joseph were part of a shuttle hurdles relay that set three school records in three meets – with its final record set at Nationals – during their senior indoor track season. Many seniors have made marks on other teams including Megan Power (East field hockey), Allie Riss (North lacrosse) and Maxianne Russo (North Swimming and Diving).

Both teams will remember their seniors because of leadership and scholarship as much as for their talent. North’s Krystal Cheng is Sachem North track & field’s second salutatorian in three years. Erin Bresnahan – North ’09 also shared the honor. Like Erin, Krystal is Cornell-bound. Krystal’s teammates Kelsie Larsen (#4), Dana Castro (#12), Keira Wood (#14), Lindsey Stretz (#17), Katie Burdge (#19), Lauren Waka (#22), Deanna Hauswirth (#30), Bruttany Wienclaw (#33), Vanessa Hall (#35), Nicole Desz (#36), Mishaina Joseph (#43), Samantha Olson (#50) and Rachel Steinberg (#52) are among team members in the top 10% of the Class of 2011. Meghan Walsh has been a leader in East’s Student Government and Mishaina Joseph has provided strong leadership in Sachem’s Model UN Club. North’s team also boasts the Class of 2011 Secretary (Amanda Miller) and Student Government’s senior VP (Paige Sampson) and Publicity Director (Stephanie Richer for two years). The Class of 2011 will be attending colleges from Boston College and Lehigh to Loyola and Hofstra with a generous dose of SUNYs as well.

Congratulations to the Sachem North and Sachem East Class of 2011. You will be missed. Below are names and colleges (when known) of alumni from both Sachems. The East list is incomplete. East coaches and athletes will help compile a complete alumni list in the very near future. An updated alumni list with East and North updates and omissions will be sent out in July.

And now for some more traditional alumni updates…
Jess Chetuck’s (’01) son is about to celebrate his first birthday. The picture below is of Colton taken in December – he’s quite the toddling hunk! Jess and hubby Vic are expecting baby #2 at the end of August “which means (in Jess’s words) that Colton and Baby #2 are only going to be about 13 months apart.  Ahhhhhhhh!”

Colton at Christmas, 2010
Congratulations to recently engaged Tracey Willner (’02). Tracey’s wedding will be in October in North Carolina (where she lives and teaches). Tracey just finished her first year in a new teaching assignment at Mills Park Middle School in Cary, NC. Tracey also completed the Cary, NC Galdiator 5K (held in May) in 32 minutes flat. The race course featured a rope bridge, “Glory Wall” and mud pit. Looks like our alumni and enjoying these Warrior-style races. More on that shortly.

Karen Labbadia (‘94) enjoyed reading about old school winter workouts in our last update. She didn’t like being reminded that her workouts took place nearly two decades ago. Still, Karen sends a cyberspace “hi” to Coach Pete McNeill.

Michele Aronson (North ’07) ran her first half marathon at the 5/15 The Greater Binghamton Bridge Run Half Marathon and 5K. Michele exceeded her race goal-time of 2 hours as she ran a sub-1:54:00 time. Michele wrote that it was fun to finish in the muddy outfield of Binghamton Mets Stadium. Michele, a May graduate of SUNY Binghamton, will become part of Teach for America in the fall as she takes on a teaching job in New Orleans. Kate LaSorsa (North ’05)– fresh from a run at Sachem North on June 24 (yesterday) – reported that she has finished her second year with Teach for America in Baltimore and is looking forward to her third year at the Baltimore school. Kate happily took part in a “fastest teacher in school” race this year. Kate finished third in the female faculty division for the 400 m. race and first in the health teacher division! She has also demonstrated racewalk to her health students – way to go, Katie!

Kim Ferrara (’99) stopped by North’s track to say hi earlier this month. Kim brought along her beautiful daughter, Emma. Emma is as charming as she is lovely. I think Emma is a future harrier. At less than a year old, Emma legs never stopped moving and Kim reports that Emma is ready to start walking (or running).

Kim Ferrara’s daughter Emma

By the way, Kim got to see North’s track before its scheduled end-of-June demolition. Kim was part of the first Sachem class to run on our soon-to-be-replaced track. The North track complex will be shut down all summer as a new track is installed.
Coach McNeill reports that Caitlyn Ryan (East ’10) is transferring from Bucknell to St. Joseph’s College. This is a great boon to St. Joe’s XC team. St. Joe’s already has a very impressive returning distance squad including Sachem alum Ally Waka (North ’08), Jenessa Donovan (North ’08), Bridget McNamara (North ’10). XC/T&F team member Katie Williams (North ’07) graduated from St. Joe’s last month. Caitlyn will be joined by North Class of 2011’s Mary Cipriano and Lauren Waka on St. Joe’s teams.

Amanda Brennan, (North ’09) a sophomore at Muhlenberg College, has been named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll for her performance both on and off the track. Amanda, a neuroscience major, placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles at the Centennial Conference Championships where she ran three-tenths of a second faster than her previous season best. She also competed in the 100 meters and 200 meters at the championship meet.

Amanda Brennan

Congratulations to Veronica Bleza (East ’05) on her June wedding. The wedding took place at Sunken Meadow Park – site of many of Veronica’s memorable XC races.

Teresa Kuehhas (’04), Nicole Dunn (’03), Ali Bourgal (’03) and Alex Totino (’03) were part of a Sachem alumni group that ran the June 11 Warrior Dash in Pennsylvania. Race day conditions were perfect – heavy rain! Teresa and Ali both declared that the race was a blast and they hope to run another. I still think there’s an alumni reunion opportunity here. Someone may have to pick a race and date and put out a call to all alumni.

Sunday runs at Connetquot State Park trails will begin on July 10. Join us! Runs start at 8:30 a.m. sharp at the usual place. Contact Pete McNeill or me if you want more info.

This is enough for our Congratulations to the Class of 2011 Update! See you on the trails!

FEBRUARY 22, 2011 UPDATE

Hi Alumni:

Happy Winter.  Or should I say Happy Almost-End-of-Winter.  And happy 279th birthday, George Washington. We are finishing up the most challenging winter season since the mid-90s when we seemed to be running on ice in workouts with Karen Labbadia, Shannon Weeks, Keri Seher and Co.  We did not see the North track from the late-December blizzard until last week’s thaw.  The 3-4” of heavy snow on Monday morning should be gone in another day or two.
Both East (3rd at Counties) and North (4th at Counties) squads are enjoying very good winter seasons.  Go to just-in-time-racing.com or the North team site at sachem.edu to see results.

Below is a note I recently received from Sachem North ’08 alum Sarah Cantatore:
My name is Sarah Cantatore and I am a junior at SUNY Geneseo. Four years ago, when I was only 17 years old, I noticed a black spot on the back of my leg. It was malignant melanoma. Luckily, I found it very early so a simple surgery was all that was needed to remove it. But not everyone is that lucky. Since that moment I have been committed to fighting back against cancer for all those who are not as lucky as I was.
Relay For Life gives us a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and fight back against the disease that has caused too much pain for far too long.
Please support me in my efforts by visiting my personal web page to make a donation using the link at the bottom of this message. Every donation really does make a difference in advancing the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving work. I understand what it is like to have a limited budget, but any amount, large or small, will help save lives.
Thank you in advance for your support.

Sarah was active in Relay for Life in all four of her years at Sachem.

Many past and current team members wrote inspiring notes to Leah Tepper last year.  Leah has been through more chemo treatments and surgeries than I can recount for the cancer she continues to fight.  Her family is strong and Leah is determined to graduate with her high school senior class in June.  Thanks for your good words, thoughts and prayers.

A SACHEM ALUMNI PAGE
I checked out the alumni link at the site below.  Some of you may find it interesting.

Hi Alex,
I found your website while searching for Sachem history.  I thought  I’d share this link and see if you or your fellow Sachem alums would like to participate.

MEMORIES…
A now for a note from Meg Barone (’98) in response to my own note to her stating that she still holds the backwards 400 record (we run this race on most April 1sts.
Hey Mr. Young:
Wow I totally forgot about the backwards 400. I loved it….The babies are getting so big. They will be 3 months on Nov 9. I am hoping to compete in the police games....[Do] you remember the twins Kim and Kelly Brown? Kelly married Katie Devito’s brother Mike last year and Kim married Rebecca Erhart’s brother Jared and have a little girl named Kacy. Well hope to see everyone soon….

TRAINING…
Michele (One L) Aronson (N’ 07) is training for the 5/15 Binghamton Half Marathon.  She will cross all 4 historic city bridges in her run.  Michele is a senior at  SUNY Bing.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Kim Ferrara (’99) and new daughter Emma Grace.  Future half-miler Emma was born on 1/7/11 weighing in at 6 lbs. 6 oz.  Kim wrote that Emma’s birthday was also the day of Laura Reilly’s (’99) surprise 30th birthday and that it was tough to keep BFF Laura away from the hospital so she could attend her surprise dinner.

Beautiful Emma Grace

ONE OF MY FAVORITE TV SHOWS!
Colleen Evanson (’02) stopped by to say hi on 2/18.  She works with the production staff for Make It or Break It – up there with Glee as one of my favorite shows.  Colleen didn’t believe me when I told her I was a fan of the show until I told her the soap opera lives of the key cast members.  Colleen – I will hold you to your promise to take me to the set when I visit California.  Colleen has also done some writing for the show.

GREAT MEET – WRONG PICTURE
Katie Williams sent me the note below and the picture that follows.  She ultimately sent me the right picture but I could not open it.

Hi Mr. Young! St. Joseph's met up with Oneonta at a recent Armory meet and here's a pic.

MILLROSE GAMES
Congratulations to Maria Michta and Erin Bresnahan on their outstanding performances at the 2011 Millrose Games.  Maria placed 2nd overall and Erin placed 3rd.  As a Canadian was the 1st place finisher, both Maria and Erin moved up one place each in the US Championship component of the race.  Maria hit the “B” standard for the 20K racewalk at the Pan American Racewalking Cup Trials held on 2/13 in Florida.  I can’t wait for Olympic Trials next year. Sounds like an alumni road trip to me!
Jeanna Composti (’99) stopped by the Millrose Games to cheer on Sachem alumni, say hi to her favorite coaches (Pete McNeill and me) and cheer on Sachem East junior Rachel Paul who was running the Millrose Mile.
I promised Maria I would put the first-ever 3 Michtas picture on our Alumni Update site.

OCTOBER 31, 2010 UPDATE

Hi Alumni,
Happy autumn.  Late October-early November brings out trick-or-treaters (Halloween) and politicians (Election Day).  Or is it the other way around?  Mid-autumn also brings out the big dogs in college XC races.  Sachem alumni have been very busy this fall.  Let’s get right to the results.
Oneonta Soph Lindsay Romaine (N ’10) placed 56th at the 10/30 SUNYAC 6K Championship held at SUNY Oswego IN 25:25.
Hartford Soph Steph Curcio (N ’10) placed 77th at the 10/30 America East Championship 5K held at Franklin Park in Boston in a time of 20:38.
Bucknell Frosh Caitlyn Ryan (E ’10) placed 44th at the Lock Haven Go Fast River Run 6K in 24:10.
Kaitlyn Meyer (E ’08) placed 25th at the 10/23 ESU Nevin Inv. 5K at East Stroudsburg U. in a PR 21:22.
Karley Dutra (N’ 10) ran a 21:59 as she placed 59th at the Little Three Meet 5K at Wesleyan U. on 10/23.
Seven alumni were present on four college teams as St. Joseph’s College won its own invitational held at Sunken Meadow on 10/23.  Sachem alumni Ally Waka (N’ 08) placed 15th in the race in 22:13.  Katie Williams (N ’07) placed 57th in 24:29. Bridget McNamara (N’ 10) placed 97th in 27:00 and Jenessa Donovan (N ’08) placed 102nd in 27:25.  SCCC frosh Leanne DeQuarto (N’ 10) led the Clippers with a 23rd place finish in 22:54.
Leanne is Suffolk’s top harrier by far.  Congratulations, Leanne.
NYIT’s Ali O’Leary (N ’07) placed 55th in 24:07.  SUNY Maritime junior Catherine Brady (N ’07) placed 53rd in 24:49.
Amanda Gaffney (N ’10) placed 24th in 19:47 at the Stevens Inv. 4K at Liberty Park, NJ on 9/24.
Amanda Ardelean (N ’07) ran the Warrior Dash in 41:14 on 9/19 finishing 1638 out of more than 5000 athletes.  The Warrior Dash was held in Windham,, NY and includes obstacles such as “Knee High Hell”, “Warrior Wall”, “Tunnels of Terror” and “Slithering Swamp” in a most extreme race.  The Warrior Dash returns to Windham next August 13 and 14.  I’m sure Amanda (who is also considering running the Philly half marathon in Nov. will be back.  The race length is a “hellish 3.23 miles” according to meet directors.  I’m intrigued – may have to check it out next year.  Anyone else up for the challenge?
SUNY Cobleskill Senior Christine Tylee (E ’06) helped lead her team to its second straight NEAC championship on 10/30. The meet was hosted at Penn State Harrisburg. Christine earned All-Conference 1st Team honors (also for the second straight year) with her 5th place finish on the 5K course in a time of 21:07. Congratulations, Christine!
Ally Waka finished 3rd for St. Joseph’s and finished 6th overall in the 10/31 Skyline Conference XC Championships.  Ally’s 6th place finish earned her All Skyline Conference 1st Team honors.  Ally ran a 21:42 on Van Cortlandt’s 5K course.  Congratulations Ally and St. Joseph’s Women’s XC team!
And now for other alumni news.
After completing tours of duty in Afghanistan (2005-06) and Iraq (2007-08), U.S. Army Captain Gina Aviles (’99) returned to U.S. military bases where she continues her service in military intelligence.  Gina commands a company of paratroopers in addition to her other duties as an Army officer.  In a recent e-mail, Gina commented that she likes jumping out of planes with Paratroopers.  I recall the excitement in Gina’s eyes when she described her first jump many years ago.  Good luck, Gina.  You can send Gina a note at gina.aviles@us.army.mil
Rachelle Amendola (N ’09) has visited North to observe classes as part of her Mathematics Education major at St. Joseph’s.
Karyn Geoghan (N’ 06) is currently interning at East Coast Conference (D II conference for Dowling, Post, Molloy, NYIT among others).
Lorraine Horgan-Ambrosino (’99) stopped by Broadway Ave. Park to say hi to North and East XC squads on 10/30.  Lorraine was driving by and saw the County Champs Meet athletes finishing a workout at the park.
Meagan Barone (’98) is still close to Sachem as she lives in Lake Ronkonkoma even though she works in Brooklyn as a NYPD detective.  Meagan’s twin sons Patrick and James are growing fast!

vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvPatrick and James with proud parents Meagan and Brian

Teresa Kuehhas (’04) will be on MSG HS sports (for the second straight year) as the St. Dom’s volleyball team she coaches is the VB game of the week for MSG.  The game was taped on 11/1.
North and East XC teams will be competing in the AA race at Counties on Friday, 11/4.  Race time is 1:55 p.m.  Results will be posted at www.just-in-time-racing.com .North results will also be posted on our team page.
Good luck to our college alumni as your fall seasons continue.  See you in the e-mails.

SEPTEMBER 12, 2010 UPDATE

Hi Alumni:

We’ve had some beautiful late summer weather. Hope you are all enjoying some outdoor time. Let’s get to the updates and some happy family news.

Congratulations to Jess Chetuck (’00). Jess and husband Victor welcomed son Colton Lee to the family on July 13.

Jess’s son Colton
Meagan Barone (’95) gave birth to twin sons Patrick and James on August 9.

Meagan’s sons Patrick and James
Nicole Serio (’99) became Nicole Markowski on her July 24 wedding day.

In teaching notes, Elizabeth Tomlet (’99) is on the PE staff at SCCC. Congratulations, Prof! Meg Barone’s little sister, Lindsay (’01) is teaching at Gatelot this year. Ali Bourgal (’02) was appointed to a PE position at North.

In more “little sister” news. Meg Haberkorn’s sister Shannon is a soph on East XC team. Shannon told me she did not remember Kaitlin Balduf, Meg’s bff from high school days when Shannon and I spoke together at the annual North/East XC workout at Robert Moses Beach on Labor Day. Maria Michta’s (’04) sisters Kristie (jr.) and Katie (frosh) are teammates on North’s XC team. Diana (’05 I think), Christina (’08) and Steph Curcio’s little sis Lisa in on the North XC team. Lisa has been dubbed “the Last of the Mohicans” as she is the fourth and last of the Curcio sisters to run for Sachem. I know the Genoino clan outnumbers the Curcio clan about 13:5 but I think the Curcios may have tied Brenda (‘98), Lori (‘00), Lindsay (’03) and Chelsea (‘08) Genoino in the Sachem-sisters on XC/track teams record. Was there another Genoino sister on a Sachem track or XC team?

In “little brother” news, Tim Lang, brother to Kelly (’08) and Kathy (’06) is in my US History class at North. I think I’m rambling now. Let’s get to the race results…

Alumni Race Results

Season openers…

SCCC’s Leanne DeQuarto (N 10) and Adelphi twins Kristen and Kaitlin Meyer (both E’ 08) had strong season openers at Hofstra’s 9/11 XC Open 5K. Leanne ran a 21:28, Kristen and 21:44 and Kaitlin a 21:53 at Bethpage State Park’s XC course.

Wesleyan frosh Karley Dutra (N’ 10) had her season opener at Wesleyan’s annual Alumni 5K on 9/11.

Hartford Soph Steph Curcio (N ’09) ran an 18:15 at Trinity College’s 4K course to help lead her team to a solid third place team finish at the at the 9/11 Trinity College XC Race.

St. Joe’s XC team (with more Sachem runners than ever!) placed first among the DII-DIII teams at the 9/4 Hofstra XC Relay Meet at Bethpage. Ally Waka (N ’08) and a teammate were the first DII-III relay finishers (51:14) as well as 6 th overall (including DI teams). Katie Williams (N ’07) and Jenessa Donovan N’ 08) were relay partners (60:44) on a St. Joe’s squad.

Bucknell’s Caitlin Ryan (E ’10) ran an 18:51 on Bucknell’s 3 mile XC course on 9/4.

In a non-XC update, RIT’s Brianne Yannotta’s (N ’09)volleyball team got off to a good start (5-3) as of 9/11. Brianne plays the right side. I’m sure there’s a good plyo element that helps middle distance runner Brianne in her track seasons!

Sachem North’s XC team competed at the 25 th annual Suffern Inv. at Bear Mt. on 9/11. It was fun to see that two Sachem alumni still hold top-25 all-time times on the famous 3 mile course. Jeanna Composti (’99) holds the #14 with an 18:10 and Jackie Berman (’99) holds the #18 spot with an 18:14. Jeanna and Jackie’s outstanding races led Sachem to a team victory at the 1998 Suffern Inv.

As 9/11 marked so many high school and college season-openers, many teams paid tributes to the memory of victims

and heroes of the Sept. 11, 2001 attackes against the United States. Sachem remembers Lt. Tim Higgins, father to Catie (’02) and Cody (E ’04) and Captain Richard Brethel, father to Kristin (E ’05).

 Sachem XC Challenge

Jeanna Composti (21:27) was the overall women’s champion at the Inaugural Sachem XC Challenge held at Sachem East’s tough 5K course. Katie Williams, Ally Waka and Bridget McNamara (N’ 10) were also Sachem alumni finishers in the 200 runner field. Coach Pete McNeill (20:35) tore it up on the course as well. Pete and Jeanna exchanged more than a little bit of trash talking in the days leading up to the race. Jeanne – Pete designed and built the East course. Sounds like something well beyond home-course advantage to me! Maureen Schaub’s (’99) kid brother Dan ran a 19:24 on the course. James Barracca (big sisters Melissa and Victoria ran on Sachem teams) was the overall winner of the race in 17:05. Lindsay LaFleur’s (E’ 04) dad showed up to race. Lou LaFleur is a good master’s runner and he showed his XC skills at the Challenge. Thanks to Pete for all his hard work in organizing the first of hopefully many XC Challenges. Proceeds of the race will help Sachem runners offset the cost of attending The Running School XC Camp and a local charity involved in autism research. Thanks, too, to SYAG for their great support in co-sponsoring the meet.
Leah Update

Thanks to all who sent good wishes to Leah, daughter of my great friend, Ken. Leah is a strong girl.  She has recently undergone a second surgery to remove a liver tumor.  The doctors reported that they were able to completely remove the tumor (they got what they call "clean margins" around the tumor - that is no cancer in the tissue surrounding the tumor).

Leah has been out of ICU for just over a week and is taking very short walks in the corridors of Children's Hospital already.  A 4th round of chemo awaits followed by what may be a final surgery before the end of the year.  Leah has already made it farther than many victims of her form of cancer.

Leah and her family have a tremendous support team as well.
See you in the updates.

The 20K and 10K courses (as well as a developmental 5K course for young area racewalkers) will be held over a 2K (1.2 mile) loop extending from Sachem North's Octogon entrance through Burma Road to Samoset's 6th grade wing parking area.

There is a special Sachem connection to this national-class race.  Sachem alumni Maria Michta (2004) and Erin Bresnahan (North 2009) will be competing at the race.  Erin -- currently a freshman at Cornell University -- won the Nike Outdoor Championship in the mile racewalk as a Sachem North senior.  Erin placed 5th in the USATF indoor National Championships held in Albuquerque, NM in February.  Maria was a 3-time indoor State champion and 5-time (indoor and outdoor) national champion while competing for Sachem.  Maria -- currently enrolled in a doctoral program at Mt. Sinai Medical School in NYC -- is currently the nation's top-ranked racewalker as she won her first national racewalk championship at USATF's National Indoor Track & Field Championships in February (3000 m. RW in 13:51.33).  Maria won this race against a field that included 2008 USA Olympic Trials Champion Joanna Dow of New Hampshire and 2004 Olympian and 7-time USA indoor and 4-time USA outdoor champion Teresa Vaill of Florida.

Sachem has a storied racewalk tradition that includes many county, NYS and national champion racewalkers.  Maria and Erin will enjoy a "home court" advantage along a course that both logged countless miles on during their respective high school careers.

One of the strongest male and female fields include top USA racewalkers as well as internationally-ranked guest athletes ever will be at North when the first race goes off at Sachem North at 10:00 a.m. next Sunday.  The course will open for athlete warm-up at 8:30 a.m.

The meet director is Gary Westerfield of WalkUSA and USATF-Long Island.

Meet volunteers will include members of both Sachem North and Sachem East Track & Field teams.

Congratulations to Tina Lai (N ’05) on her engagement last October. In addition to 2011 wedding bells, Tina is almost done with her master studies at MIT.

Both North and East teams will be heading to States and Nationals as they close out their winter seasons and look ahead to exciting spring campaigns. See you in the updates!

January 31, 2010-Hi Alumni:
It has been a very long time between updates. Much has happened, most recently at the 2010 edition of the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden on Friday, 1/29. Sachem North alumni Maria Michta (’04) and Erin Bresnahan (’09) joined the rest of the field in the in the mile racewalk (also the indoor national mile racewalk championship). Maria placed 3 rd overall (7:00.85) in the race and Erin placed 4 th (7:03.49). The winner Rachel Seaman (wife of Maria’s coach Tim Seaman) is a Canadian citizen, so Maria and Erin placed 2 nd and 3 rd, respectively in the national championships. Congratulations! Maria and Erin may both compete in the LITF Association Championships on Saturday 2/6. The 3000 m. Racewalk goes off at 10:30. Come to Suffolk West to cheer on Sachem’s national-class alumni.
In other update news, North ‘09 alumni Lindsay Romaine (SUNY Oneonta), Gina Medici (SUNY Brockport) and Brianne Yanotta (RIT) enjoyed a reunion at the 1/23 St. Lawrence Invitational. Gina’s Brockport team has Sachem alumni-bragging rights as Brockport placed 3 rd in team scoring. RIT (5 th) edged out Oneonta (6 th) by one point. Sachem East ’09 alumni Breanna Eng (U. Rochester) competed at the same meet. Breanna gets to brag the loudest as Rochester placed first in team scoring.

Gina, Lindsay and Brianne at St. Lawrence Inv.
Caitlyn Hauswirth (N. ’08) continues to lead Hartford Hawks PVers with a win at University of Vermont (12/5/09) in a career-best 9’ 4.25”. Teammate Steph Curcio (N. ’09) is part of the distance squad at Hartford with two mile races under her belt (with a best of 6:00.00) in her frosh winter season.
Binghamton junior Rosie DeFino (North ’07) continues her outstanding Bearcat career. She won long jump (17’ 6”) and took second in the 55 m. hurdles (8.95) at the 1/16 Syracuse Indoor Invitational. St. Joseph College Golden Eagle Ally Waka (North ’08) set a school record in the 1000 m. run at the Armory on 1/18 at the NYU Gotham Cup (1/16). Ally ran her 3:37.15 1000 m. run after her mile run (6:02.90). Congratulations! Teammate Jenessa Donovan p-b’d. in the 800 (3:10.74) at the Gothan Cup. Lindsay Romaine (3000 m. in 11:05.69) was at the meet, too.
We’ve seen many Sachem alumni at Sachem workouts and meets during the indoor season. North ‘09ers Romaine, Victoria Piccirillo, Carolyn Quimby, Juli Miller and Cailey Wood (’08) were among those at League 2 relays to see formers teammates and a success assault on the North indoor 4x1600 m. record. Cailey in early January. Melanie Salamon (East ’07) stopped by Monday night PV workout at East to say hi and get a few good-looking vaults in for old time’s sake. Melanie stays in shape on Binghamton’s gymnastics team.

In other update news…

Alyssa McDonald graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in May, 2009 and is stationed on the CGC Decisive in Mississippi. Emily Hartmann (Sachem ’04 and CGA ’08) got engaged last spring and is stationed in Florida as of last June. Erin McCormack (North ’07) completed a semester of study abroad at the University College of Dublin (a true “Green Bandit” school!) Danielle Tanzi (’94) and Coach Pete McNeill enjoyed a brief reunion as the current school year began. Danielle was Sachem’s top middle distance runner in her senior year.

In a wonderful blast from the past Class of ’83 Karen (Schreyer) Hildebrandt dropped a line to say hi. Karen ran for Coach Jeff Stone and has run several marathons. She lives in San Diego and ran the Carlsbad Half Marathon on 2:24.36 on Jan. 24. Congratulations, Karen! Karen counts at least one Sachem track & field “fruity shirt” in her training gear collection.

Congratulations to Kristina (Wilfinger) Foderaro (’96) on the September birth of son Dominic. Dominic and big sis Sophia (almost two) are early favorites in my book for sprint events in the 2032 Olympics.

Kerri Spatz and Kerry Hannigan (both ’01) continue to coach XC and track & field at Bethpage HS. Kerri teaches English and Kerry teaches math at the high school. Sachem North and East head to County Championships tomorrow, 2/1 at Suffolk West. Hi Alumni – June 27, 2009
Another June, another graduation. There are over 50 alumni additions to our alumni update. Before celebrating the Sachem North and East Classes of 2009, I must offer some background to our alumni updates.

Alumni updates are sent out from time to time (about every two months or so) to keep Sachem XC and track & field alumni up to date on some happenings. College performances, road races and other special events are highlighted in each update. Our e-mail list changes from time to time as e-mail addresses change and as alumni from past years find us and their names to our list. For instance, Megan Barone (’98) crossed paths with Coach Pete McNeill recently and she hopes to add her name/e-mail address to our list. (note: Mr. Mc. expressed that Megan might be a bit jealous that little sis Lindsay (’04) gets all the alumni updates!) All updates will appear on the alumni link at http://www.sachem.edu/dept/sports/girlstrack/ . I will send out update announcements to our e-mail list that do not appear on the sachem website so send e-mail addresses to me to be added to our alumni list at any time. Tell your friends! The best way to make an alumni update is to brag about a race or competition or to send an update of your own from time to time. Send in corrections when you see an error. Feel free to send pictures, too. This year’s group of alumni has achieved a great deal. You may have seen two -- Amanda Brennan and Erin Bresnahan on News 12 as scholar-athletes of the week – joining Shannon Weeks (’96) in this honor. Erin Bresnahan joins Jenna Monahan (E ’07), Maria Michta (’04), Lorraine Horgan (’99) and Brenda Genoino (‘98) as a national champion racewalker as Erin won the RW at Nike Outdoor Championships last spring. East’s hurdlers – led by Breanna Eng, Athena Marneris and Nicole Driscoll – competed at National Indoor Scholastic Championships in March. Scholarship is a big part of the tradition of success enjoyed by both teams. In addition to the outstanding colleges on the list below it must be noted that many Class of ’09 members have received impressive scholarships. I listed college team nicknames next to the North alumni who plan to compete in college. At least eight North alumni will compete at the college level. I do not have this information for East. East athletes competing in college – please let me know so I can send out an update before you start your college careers. Please note that there may be unintentional omissions. The East list was built at their end-of-year awards dinner. Several seniors missed the dinner. I added several names to the East list. Please let me know if others are missing. If I missed any North names, it’s because I had a brain fart! Speaking of FART – don’t forget that you can consider yourself part of FART (Flaming Arrows Running Team) for all time! It’s more fun when you run Ocean to Sound Relay or some other race as a member of FART.

Congratulations Class of 2009!

Now back to some alumni business. Congratulations Kristin Brethel (E ’05) on completing the Boston Marathon on April 20. Here are some of Kristin’s words on her race: It was the most painful and the most rewarding experience of my life.  Unfortunately, two things happened in the first 4-5 miles that hadn't happened on any previous run over the last 6 months, I got a big blister on the bottom of my foot and somehow injured a muscle in my right ankle.  The muscle started to hurt so much that I was afraid I wouldn't be able to finish.  But, I got it wrapped up at a medical tent at about mile 10 and was able to ignore it for the remaining 16 miles.  If you signed up for the text alerts you might have seen my split times fall from about 9 min/mile for the first 5k to about 12 min/mile overall.  I had to do a bunch of walking to make sure my ankle and the rest of my body would be able to run hard the last couple of miles.  I was able to find Kaitlin Fallier (N ’05) and her sister, Renee, in the crowd over by BU (where Renee goes to school) with about a mile to go.  It felt great to run down Boylston St. toward the finish line and give it a little kick at the end.

Kristin at mile 25 (thanks Kaitlin Fallier!) Congratulations to Maureen Schaub (’99) on her wedding on April 25. Congratulations to Nicole Serio (’99) and Amy Nolan (’99) on their recent engagements. Jenna Monahan ( ’07) and Jen Modzel (N ’05) crossed paths at a meet in April as SUNY Cortland (Jenna) and SUNY Plattsburgh (Jen) cross paths quite often in the SUNYAC region. Picture below…

Jen (left) and Jenna

We’ll have more college news in a future update. But congratulations to Laura Michelsen (’03). Laura finished graduate work in May and is working at Kings County Hospital in East Flatbush Brooklyn as an in-patient mental health social worker. Summer XC training will begin after July 4 th weekend. H.S. boys and girls will start building their foundations for fall XC on Mondays (Broadway Ave. Park), Wednesdays (Sachem East trails) and Fridays (Greenbelt trails) from 5:00-7:30. Alumni are ALWAYS welcome to join us on these SYAG Conditioning Camp runs. Get in touch with me or Pete McNeill for more info. This is a pretty lengthy update. Almost as long as one of my “brief speeches”. See you in the updates! Alex Young Alumni at Suffolk Coaches Relay on 4/4/09

Sachem alumni Gina Lodato (’03) and Teresa Kuehhas (’04) flank former North Coach Rob Lehnert (now head coach at Connetquot Girls Track & Field) and are joined by alum Nicole Dunn (03) on (typically) chillyand windy day at Bay Shore’s Suffolk Coaches Inv. on 4/4. Gina, Teresa, Nicole and Sammy Blomquist (’03) will reunite on the track on 4/18 at Connetquot H.S. during Joe Brandi Relays. The last event of the relay meet will be a coaches and alumni 4x100. One of Sachem’s fastest-ever sprint relays will step up to represent Sachem at the meet. Sachem North and East coaches Alex Young, Billy Holl, Danny Schaub and James Barracca will also take to the track in this race against some of the Coonetquot’s legendary runners as well as an all T-Bird coaching squad. Come on down to cheer us on or to put together more alumni relays – we’ll have plenty of extra batons!
3/29/09 Update Hi Alumni, Things sure are busy in the Sachem world (at least for me). Just finished SachemStock VI last week. Sachem March Madness enters its final week with the usual exciting no-holds-barred playground rules action. And we are already in week 3 of the spring season. Erin Bresnahan of Sachem North closed out her winter season by joining a very impressive list of All-American Sachem alumni. Erin placed 3 rd in the mile racewalk at Nationals (after a 5 th place finish at States). Erin is a relative newcomer to RW as she began the event in her junior outdoor season. Sessions with 2008 Coach Lorraine Horgan (’99) catapulted Erin to #5 in Suffolk at the end of her junior season. Erin had many impressive races in her rookie indoor season, including a 1 st place finish in the mile racewalk at Brown Relays in January. For those with “Big Red” connections, Erin will be attending Cornell University next fall. Sachem East continued its string of successes with another League 1 title at the end of January. For those with family/friend links to the boys program, the North boys track and field team won the League 2 and Suffolk County team titles during the indoor season.

Future Track & Field Star! 5 5

Sophia Foderaro – daughter of Kristina (Wlifinger) Foderaro – Sachem Class of ‘96 Look for Sophia (who is very close to her first birthday at the 2028 Olympics! Congratulations to Sachem alumni who enjoyed exciting college indoor track seasons. Current Sachem North seniors Lindsay Romaine, Steph Curcio and Victoria Piccirillo car-pooled with Coach and Mrs. Coach Young to the Wesleyan Inv. in February. Lindsay, Steph and VicPic enjoyed a reunion with Katie Williams (N ’07), Jenessa Donovan (N ’08) and Caitlyn Hauswirth (N ’08) at the meet. Jenessa and Katie run for St. Joseph’s College and Caitlyn vaults and hurdles for Hartford College. Cailey Wood (N ’08) enjoyed a very good rookie season at Oneonta. Cailey had career-best in LJ (15’ 9.25”) and 55 m. Hurdles (9.75) during the indoor season.

Rosie DeFino (N. ’07) had an outstanding season at Binghamton. One highlight was her third place finish in the pentathlon at the American East Championships. Rosie scored 3127 points as she narrowly missed second place (by 8 points) at the championship meet. Congratulations Cailey and Rosie! SUNY Plattsburgh senior Jen Modzel had a busy SUNYAC Championship Meet as she ran the 800 (2:29.14), placed 5 th in the mile (5:26.29) and ran on Plattsburgh’s 5 th place DMR. I hear from Michele Aronson’s (N ’07) kid brother Bryan (in my US His. Class) that Michele is doing very well at Binghamton. Jess McCusker (N ’07) is looking after Amanda Beltrani (N ’08) at SUNY Albany. Jess is back in training as she plans to run a 5K at the end of April for a local volunteer ambulance company. Following is a note from Kristin Brethel (East ’07). Kristin was an outstanding long sprinter for Sachem teams at North (pre-split) and East. She is a senior and psych. major at Tufts University. I hope each alumni who reads her note is inspired to help a great cause! Hey there Sachem track alumni!

My name is Kristin Brethel and I graduated in 2005 after 8 seasons of winter and spring track.  As I'm sure you have, I've missed running, competing, and being part of a team since my time at Sachem.  Luckily, there is a program at Tufts University in Medford, MA, where I am currently a senior, that is filling the running void.  It's known as the President's Marathon Challenge and it was started by Tufts president Larry Bacow in 2003.  This year 200 members of the Tufts community, including myself, will be running the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston in the Boston Marathon on April 20th.  But, that's not all.  I'm also raising $1000 for the Tufts school of nutrition.  The money raised by all of the runners on the team will support research in nutrition, fitness, obesity, and famine.  You can learn more here: http://nutrition.tufts.edu/research

This is where you can help me get to the finish line.  I realize that money is probably tight, but you wouldn't have to give a lot to help out. Even if you could donate just $1, that would bring me closer to $1000!  If you would like to donate, go to my runner page and click on "sponsor this runner":

with my name on the memo line.

Thanks for taking the time to read my message and for any support you can give me!  Please email me at kristin.brethel@gmail.com if you have any questions!

Kristin Sachem alumni Gina Lodato (N ’04) is in her secod season coaching jumpers and sprinters at North. Billy Holl (North Babylon and Geneseo ’07) is in his second season coaching at North. Pete McNeill is joined by Maureen Schaub’s (’99) kid brother Danny and James Barracca (kid brother of several Barracca’s who ran for the Arrows) at East. Keep those updates coming in. Follow Sachem North at sachem.edu’s athletic site and stay in touch with Pete McNeill through his team site. Enjoy your spring seasons, your spring semesters, your families and careers. See you in the updates. Alex
12/29/08 Alumni Update

Happy Holidays, Alumni!  A lot has happened in the more than 3 months since the last Alumni Update.   First of all, thanks to all the alumni who helped out at the Jeff Stone Run in October.  The event was a success with the greatest turnout of elementary and middle school runners in several years.  Some alumni who pitched in (my apologies to any alumni not listed) include Teresa Kuehhas, Kim Ferrara, Allison (Stiegelmaier) Florio, Amanda Greenberg, Veronica Bleza, Cailey Wood, Caitlyn Causwirth, Ally Waka, Kristen and Kaitlin Meyer, Katie Trentowski, Jenna Monahan, Amy Ootomakorn and Jen Villa.  Keep this up and Coach McNeill will throw in an alumni race!   Congratulations to Kiki Johnson (N, ’06) for enjoying her finest field hockey season in her junior year at Rutgers.  Her team was ranked in the NCAA top 20 during the fall season.  Erin Rafferty and Rosie DeFino (both N, ’07) are both pentathletes.  Rosie had an outstanding freshman year at Binghamton and Erin has moved into the multi-events at Bucknell.  Rosie holds the Sachem record in pentathlon.  Erin, one of North’s outstanding sprinters and high jumpers, will treasure the memory of her first 800 (remember joining the distance workout run to the “ghetto trail” in your senior year?).   Erin McCormack (N, ’07) got back into the distance circuit by running 5Ks near her Buffalo campus in Oct. and Nov.  Caitlin Doran (N, 05), Kristen Brethel (E, 05) and Caitlyn Heyden (N ’05) ran local (LI) road races in October and November.  They ran a Run for Children in honor of North teacher Jen Ogozalek’ son Matt who has been fighting leukemia (he’s doing great!) on 10/18.  They joined up again for a turkey trot 5K in Smithtown on 11/27.  Danielle Turner (’02) and much of her family also ran the turkey trot.  The following showed up on race results for the 5K:THE EXACT DISTANCE OF THIS EVENT IS NOT KNOWN BECAUSE MANY, IF NOT ALL OF THE PARTICIPANTS, WENT OFF COURSE.  UNFORTUNATLEY, NOT EVERYONE WHO WENT OFF COURSE TOOK THE SAME ROUTE TO THE FINISH.  THE PACE COLUMN HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE RESULTS AS IT WAS CALCULATED BASED ON A 5K DISTANCE. This is the kind of race that attracts Sachem alumni!   Jen Scarola (’01) ran her first half marathon on 11/2 in just over 2 hours.  Jen is looking ahead to her next half (sounds like a full marathon may be in her future!).  Jen is happily married to her h.s. sweetheart Rob and is living in Raleigh, NC.  Natalie Johnston (’03) is continuing her fine post-college running.  Natalie ran a 5 miler in Central Park in 32:47 (6:33 pace) in the fall.  Kim Ferrara (’99) ran the NYC marathon this fall(more on Kim later).   Meghann DeVito (’01) ran her first marathon in early December at the California International Marathon in Sacramento.  Meghann ran an outstanding time of 3:19.  Congratulations!  She also qualified for the Boston marathon next April.  Meghann just completed her year as a physician assistant student.  She will head off to Ethiopia for her first rotation over the next week or so.  Good luck, Meghann.   Academic Update:  Congratulations to Rubina Madni (’01) on beginning her final semester at Yale University Law School.  Rubina will be working in DC following graduation.   Wedding Bells!  Congratulations to Theresa Viscardi (N ’04) on her Christmas Eve engagement.  Kim Ferrara (’99) and Lorraine Horgan (’99) had weddings in the fall.  Pictures below…  You’ll see Sachem alumni and bridesmaid Laura Reilly (’99) toasting bride Kim in one picture.  Lorraine is surrounded by members of her XC team at her wedding.  Lorraine Horgan

Kim Ferrara (and Laura Reilly)    Kim’s track and field program at Bowne H.S. continues to grow.  Kim (still working without an assistant but she is looking for volunteer coaches) has 30 girls on her team.  The Bowne squad will head up to Brown Relays on New Year’s Day.  Pete and I look forward to a reunion.  Alumni – contact Kim or me if you would like to make any size donation to help Kim’s team get to meets like Brown (her kids raise every dollar needed to take these trips as most of their families cannot help out with trip costs).    Sachem North and East Class of ’08 athletes are getting into their indoor seasons.  Congratulations to Cailey Wood (N,’08).  Cailey is a HJer and hurdler at SUNY Oswego.  Cailey cleared opening height of 4’ 9” at her first meet.  Caitlyn Hauswirth (’09) is a PVer and hurdler at U. of Hartford.  I will have more college track & field updates in the next update.

Happy New Year to all! Alex
9/9/08 UPDATE

Hi Alumni:    Tropical Storm Hannah treated Long Island more gently than expected BUT Hannah did knock down a tree on Sachem North’s “Big Loop” leading into the Project Adventure woods – this part of the course is passed three times on the XC course.  The pass will be cleared in plenty of time for our October home meets.    Sachem North and East XC have season-opener meets at the Guilderland Invitational.  Many XC alumni will remember the Invitational for its famous Suicide (down)Hill in the last ½ mile of the course at Tawasentha Park.    Sachem’s annual Jeff Stone XC Run will be held at East on Columbus Day Monday (10/13).  First race is at 11:00 a.m.  Stop by to say hi, to bring young racers to the K-8th grade races and to support this great community service and annual scholarship effort.  Contact Pete McNeill or Alex Young for more info.  Thanks to all the alumni who showed up at Applebee’s (near the Smith Haven Mall) to support the Labor Day North XC car wash.    A correction… Stefanie Mignone (East ’08) – is attending New Paltz (NOT Marist!).    Jasmine Huancayo (North ’07) is in her final semester in SCCC’s honor’s program and will move on to NYU Steinhardt School to continue her foreign language (Italian and Spanish) studies.  Jasmine plans to teach upon graduation – we hope you make it back to Sachem!    Meg Donlevy (North ’06) is continuing her swimming career at SUNY Cortland along with former Sachem teammate Samantha Buckley.  Meg is one of the Red Dragon’s top freestyle swimmers.  A late congratulations to Christine Tylee (East ’07) on being named to the 2007 DIII All-Region XC 1st Team.    Jeanna Composti (’99) has worked out with both East and North XC squads in recent weeks as she prepares for the half marathon distance.  Jeanna gets to yuk it up with former teammate North XC Coach Lorraine Horgan (’99) when she runs at North.  Congratulations to Lorraine as her wedding date is less than 5 weeks away.    Coach Pete McNeill is tearing up the trails and roads.  He anchored Super Runners Shop 50+ team to first overall masters team at the annual Ocean to Sound Relay on 9/7.  Mr. Mc. will run the coaches-alumni race at Guilderland next on 9/13.    Sachem alumni were all over the place at the Hofstra Invitational held at Bethpage State Park on 9/6/08.  Twins Kristen and Kaitlyn Meyer (both East ’08) finished 14th and 27th overall for Adelphi, winners of the DII-III Division of the race.  Ali O’Leary (North ’07) was the first finisher for CW Post.  Ally Waka (North ’09) finished 2nd for St. Joseph’s College.  Ally’s St. Joe’s teammates Katie Williams (North ’07) and Jenessa Donovan (North ’08) also competed at the meet.    Jen Modzel (North ’05) earned kudos by her SUNY Plattsburgh coach for being a key runner in the Cardinals upset of #14th ranked Middlebury on 9/6.  See excerpts from the Plattsburgh press release below for more.  Jen rocks! (There’s a double pun – Jenny’s Rock and Jen’s major – happening here!)   Sept. 6, 2008 Cardinals Top No. 14 Middlebury for Classic Crown PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -   The unranked Plattsburgh State women's cross country team captured its own Cardinal Classic championship on Saturday by virtue of a tiebreaker, defeating 14th-ranked Middlebury in the process.  The Cardinals and Panthers were tied in the team standings with 28 points, but Plattsburgh was declared the team champion because its sixth-place competitor crossed the finish line before Middlebury's sixth-place finisher….    Jen Modzel (20:23) was the hero for the Cardinals as the team's sixth-place finisher, edging the Panthers Grace Giles by five seconds.  Modzel ran 1:10 faster than she did at last weekend's Battle of the North Country meet.    "I was very pleased to see every woman run faster than last week--and most by over 30 seconds. Our top 5 average time was 36 seconds faster than last weekend," said Plattsburgh coach John Lynch, referring to the Battle of the North Country meet.  "Freshmen Martha Brown, Colleen Cotey and Stefanie Braun had outstanding races, and they were encouraged by their captains Jen Taft and Jen Modzel who finished in the same pack."

Can you spot Jen Modzel in team huddle at 9/6/08 Cardinal Inv.?  Look carefully.

8/23/08 UPDATE   Good luck to North and East Classes of ’08 as they look ahead to starting their undergraduate studies at colleges from St. Joseph’s College to University Chicago.  Some have already departed and some look ahead to meeting new coaches and teammates.  Congratulations to Sachem alumni-college graduates.  Some college Class of ‘08ers are in the job market and others look forward to graduate studies.  By the time most of you read this update, Sachem North and East will have begun their respective fall XC seasons.  You will hear about Sachem teams from time to time in alumni updates.  And now for some updates…    Jess Nazario (’00) got engaged on June 22nd to her long time boyfriend (Zach Fener) of 4 ½ years. They plan a wedding for June 27, 2009.  Congratulations!    Christina Squillace (’04) is working in Pittsburgh and looking forward to attending Pennsylvania Culinary Institute in the near future – she wants to be like Top Gun Chef!  Count us in for a reunion gathering at your first restaurant.    Seen at Sachem running spots recently – Christine Tylee (E ’06) at East’s XC course.  Christine had an outstanding JUCO career at Suffolk and looks forward to continuing her running career.  Christina DeLeon (East ’06) at Connetquot State Park trails for a Sunday run.    Seen on summer road racing circuit…  Laura Reilly (’99) and Sue Filipowich (’01) are regulars on the State Park Summer Series runs as they ran Belmont, Hempstead, Caumsett and other races.  Jenn Patti (N ’06) ran Heckscher and the 4 mile Run Around the Lake (Ronk.)  Jenn also ran the Dirty Socks 10K in Babylon last week – not bad for a sprinter!  Ali O’Leary (N’ 07 and CW Post XC) and her parents also ran ‘round the Lake.  Ashlee Ortiz (’04) ran the Robert Moses 5K with Sue. F. and Laura R. – I wonder if they saw each other?  Meg Sudano (’01?) ran the Heckscher 5 miler.    Noreen Gildea (’00) ran the Sayville Summerfest 4 miler.  Her time of 30:16 – fast by most standards – may have been faster if not for Noreen’s new engagement ring.  Congratulations!  East coach Pete McNeill 7th overall in 23:33) and his wife Kathy (32;23) tore up the course.    Keri Seher (’97) stopped by Division Championships at the end of May to say hi and show off her beautiful daughter.  Teresa Kuehhas (’04) will start her teaching career at St. Dominic’s H.S. in Oyster Bay in a few days.  Welcome to our e-mail list Amy Oottamakorn (N. 05)! Happy Labor Day and see you in the updates. Young

6/29/08 Update Hi Alumni -    A quick update and some Olympics news...    Kim Ferrara ('99) is getting married on Thursday!  Congratulations and we all wish year a lifetime of happiness!  Kim -- in keeping with a recent alumni tradition -- has a Sachem teammate as her maid of honor.  Laura Reilly ('99) is Kim's MOH.  I will send out a wedding picture in a future update.    On July 6, Maria Michta – one of Sachem's most acclaimed (both nationally and internationally) track and field alumni will compete at US Olympic Team trials at legendary Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.  Maria is competing in the 20 kilometer Racewalk.  Maria recently (on May 11) p.b.'d in the 20 K Racewalk in1:45:02 in Cheboksary, Russia.  You can find out more about Olympic Trails at http://www.usatf.org/events/2008/OlympicTrials-TF/schedule.asp.    Maria's race goes off at 7:00 a.m. Pacific time (10 a.m. local time) next Sunday.  We're proud of and excited for you, Maria!  Go, Arrows!  Go, Mushie!! Alex  6/28/08 UpdateHi Alumni --    Congratulations to the Sachem North and East Classes of 2008.  This year's graduation brings many new alumni to our track and field alumni list.  The Class of 2008 is a very accomplished class both in athletics and in academics.  New Alumni from North and East are listed below along with the seasons they ran and (in most cases) the colleges they are attending in the fall.  I may have an error or two in colleges listed -- alumni please send corrections or fill in omissions.

Caitlyn Hauswirth (Sachem North Thomas Sabatelle Scholar-Athlete Award winner) placed first in the Open Division of the NY Empire Games trials last week as she matched her North PV record 9' 0".  Sachem North junior Amanda Brennan won the heptathlon at Empire trials -- congratulations to both.      Congratulations to Sachem East's Laura Greene on being named Outstanding Athlete at the Senior Sports Banquet earlier this month.  Laura is one of NYS's top distance runners.  Finally, congratulations to Jeff Stone Scholarship winners Christina Curcio (North) and Kaitlin and Kristen Meyer (East).  Thanks to all three girls on their outstanding contributions to our XC and track programs on the district and community level.  Christina (the 2nd of 3 Curcios to run for Sachem) and the Meyer twins are all heading to Adelphi in the fall.  Adelphi senior Lindsay LaFleur (East 2005) will be reunited with her East teammates.      And now on to other alumni updates...    Christine Tylee (East '06) and Laura Reilly ('99) ran the LI 1/2 Marathon in May.  Christine was an age group winner in 1:45.55 and Laura ran a solid 2:18.16.  A belated congratulations to Allison Herzog ('99).  Allison got a blurb in Newsday on her promotion to assistant account executive for HJMT Communications of Westbury.  Allison was formerly a columnist for the Newport Mercury newspaper in RI.  Allison is not on our e-mail list.  Can anyone find her?      Welcome to our list, Lindsay Barone ('04).  Lindsay just graduated from St. Joseph's College with a BAs in both elem. ed. and speech.  She will subbing in Sachem in the fall.  See you in the faculty cafeteria, Lindsay!  Welcome home, Kristin Brethel (East '05).  Kristin spent 6 weeks in France following the conclusion of her junior spring semester at Tufts.  Kristin in leaving my pool club and her lifeguard buddy Caitlin Heyden (North '05) this summer.  We only get Caitlin for this last summer as she plans on attending med school at NYCOM in the fall.  Kristin may take on Tuft's President's Marathon Challenge and run Boston's historic marathon course next April.  Kristin did not want me to let the cat out of the bag yet, but I figure we could try to peer pressure her a bit in case she has second thoughts.  Je suis désolé, Kristin.      Two picture below from Erin (nee Silvering) Grey's wedding.  Erin ('98) was married on May 24th.  That's the lucky guy - Colin - in the left photo and the bridal party on the right.  Erin's maid of honor (kneeling left) is Erin's former Sachem teammate Cathy Mahoney (also '98).  Erin -- please pass this e-mail on to our favorite engineer and get her to e-mail me!

Caitlin Doran (North '05) is a nursing major at Pace and is spending the summer around the corner from the Armory at NY Presbyterian Hospital in Columbia University's transplant unit.  Caitlin's big sis Meaghan ('02) is curently workoing at Pitney Bowes in CT and plays on her work co-ed softball team the Bad News Bowes.  As a former shotput/discus thrower, I'm sure Meaghan can do some damage at bat and in the field. Meaghan reports that her former teammate and team co-captain Lisa Nachreiner ('02) is engaged and will be getting married next July.  Lisa lives in South Carolina and is a preschool autism teacher.  This may be the longest alumni e-mail in history!  I'll send out another update later on this summer.  Stay in touch if you want to know more about our summer running (SYAG conditioning camp) and our Sunday runs at Connetquot Park.    Enjoy your summer!

SENT 6/16/08 Hi Alumni --    The track and field seasons at Sachem North and east have ended with some very exciting performances at both schools.  Sophomore Lisa Luchsinger of East earned a trip to States in the 100 and 200 m. sprints.  Caitlyn Hauswirth of North broke the school record in pole vault with a 9' 0" vault at State Quals.    See the North team page at www.sachem.edu and just-in-tine-racing.com for more results from both East and North.    Most -- if not all-- of the 2007 North alumni have been receiving alumni updates this year.  This is not so for the 2007 East alumni.  So a belated welcome to the alumni e-mails East 2007 grades!  Here are the names of East alumni: 2007 East Alumni WT = Winter Track; STF = Spring Track & Field) Sarah Parsloe (XC) - Marist Jenna Monahan (XC, WT, STF) - St. Joseph's Shayna Michaels (WT, STF) Melanie Salamon (WT, STF) - SUNY Bing. Elizabeth Pavacic (WT, STF) Amanda Sclafani (WT, STF) Laurie Wooster (WT, STF) Julianne Wernau (WT) Jacqueline Seigal (WT) Tiffany Yovino (WT) Stephanie Sampayo (WT) Michelle Boccuzzo (XC, STF)    Please feel free to send more e-mails and alumni news to me.   More Alumni updates...    From Carly Gomes ('01) on the last update (in April)...
"This was, by far, the most informative alumni update I have ever read (I think).  I can't believe some of my old classmates/teamates are teaching, coaching their own track teams.... buying houses?!   Crazy.  Meanwhile, I'm still in school (can you believe it?  It's like a never ending marathon).  Anyways, I hope you're doing well!"  Thanks for the great note, Carly.  Carly was one of our 4xSmart relay specialists back in the day.   Congratulations to Maureen Schaub ('99) on her engagement to Mark.  A wedding is scheduled for April, 2009.  Congratulations to Selina Finelli ('95?) on her Feb. marriage to a Northport alumnus (she lives in Fla.).   Alex Totino is a physical therapy student at Stony Brook now and plans to grad in Aug. 2010.  Study hard!

Erin Rafferty and Rosie DeFino (both North '07) meet up at a collegiate track meet on 4/12.      Congratulations to Emily Hartmann ('North '04) on her graduation form the Coast Guard Academy.  Emily has a BS in Operations Research and Computer Analysis.  Emily reported to the Coast Guard Cutter Venturous (in St. Petersburg, FL) on June 9th.     Kristin Brethel (East '04)  is currently in France in a six week study program with Tufts.  Kristin is a psych major and preparing to head back to school to start some work on her senior honors thesis.  Bon chance, Kristin!    The Young family is doing well with Matt looking ahead to his senior year at Wesleyan, Eric (a soon-to-be-HS grad) is planning on attending Bard College in the fall and Rebecca is studying for her soph HS regents exams when her 16 year old mind is occupied with text-messaging and e-mails.  Pete McNeill's daughter, Meg, is a recent college grad and son Patrick just finished year 1 at college.    SYAG's summer conditioning camp will kick off in early July.  Contact Pete or me (or Jaimie D.) if you are interested in joining us for some runs.    Next update -- the class of 2008!Alex

SENT 5/17/08 Hi Alumni:    Congratulations to Hall of Fame 5K runners in today's race.  Katie Williams (North '07) ran a 24:46, Alex Totino (North '03) ran 23:35 and Sarah Parsloe (East '07) tore up the course in 20:47.  Sarah was the 1st woman finisher in the race.  Maria Michta's mom, Sue (Sachem '76), ran a very impressive 23:19.  I think she has some high school XC /track eligibility left...    Maria Michta (North '04) ran a personal-best 1:45.02 at the IAAF RW Championships in Russia last week.  Maria moved up steadily after the 5K mark advancing from 81st to 66th overall over the last 15K of the race.  Maria was the 2nd (out of 5) American finisher in the race.  Maria used the championship meet as her final 20K race before US Olympic trials.  Jenna Monahan (East '07) placed 52nd overall in the Junior Division 10K at the same meet in a season-best 55:43.   While I think Jenna's race was outstanding, she wrote me, "I didn't have such a great race but I think it was a contribution to the lack of edible food in Russia for us to eat and the 8 time zone changes."  Good luck at Junior Nationals, Jenna!    Sachem North and East squads are looking ahead to the postseason and the Class of '08 is a little more than one month away from joining our alumni e-mail list.  Hope to see some of you at the next rounds of championship meets. Alex  SENT 4/22/08 Hi Alumni:      Sachem North and East are heading to Penn Relays on Thursday.  Let me know if any alumni will be at Penn.  We will be sitting in the "usual" spot. on the shady side of Franklin Field (temps will be 80 degrees).  This will be my first trip with Sachem teams in several years.  I'm looking forward to the great races, 25 cent bets on the outcome of 4x400s, a cheesesteak hogie and -- hopefully --  a sub-4:15 4x400.    I left Bowne High School Coach Kim Ferrara ('99) of our last list of coaching alumni.  Kim is in her 3rd year with the team.  She has dealt with an adversarial administration as her spring season began.  Things worked out very well for Kim and the Bowne team.      Sophia Ward Foderaro was born on April 9, 2008 to parents Don and Kristina (Wilfinger - '96).  She was born at 8:14 pm and weighed 8 pds 14 ozs.  She was 21 inches long.  Kristina reports that beautiful Sophia already has her first pair of Nikes.  If Sophia's gene pool tells the story, she will be part of some very good 4x100s beginning in 2022 when she starts her freshman season of high school track.      Shannon Chetuck stopped by Port Jeff HS for the annual SteepleFest Meet (3 years).  She reports that little sis Jesse (2001) is getting married this summer and Michele ('00) has been stationed in Afghanistan since last Sept.  This is Michele's second tour of duty in a War on Terrorism hot spot.  Michele was stationed in the Mideast in 2004.  Shannon stated that Michele is due to return stateside in May.  Stay well, Michele.   Alex
 UPDATE SENT 4/13/08

Hi Alumni:    Time for a long-awaited update.  I'm probably going to leave off some good stuff, so please send me updates of any good news I missed.      Nicole deBoer (North '07 ran the Army 10 miler in Washington DC in Oct. '07 and tried out for the Army Ranger Challenge team at Hofstra.  Nicole's little sis Stephanie is a rookie soph on North's track team this  spring.  Sarah Parsloe (East '07) ran XC at Marist and was part of the top 5 varsity squad.  A highlight for Sarah was the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt - it was a 6K course where she ran a 24:47.  Sarah ran an indoor 5K in 18:50 for Marist in February -- that gets an alumni ZOOM!      Briana Eckert ('03) student taught at Smithtown East in social studies in the fall semester.  Briana reported that big sis Kristin ('00) is still living in Connecticut working for an online textbook company for about 3 or 4 years now and just received a big raise.  Bri's big sis #2 Donna ('01) is  at home with baby Liam who is almost 3.  Donna recently took the SCPD exam.  Noreen Gildea ('00) reported the engagement of brother Pat last August.  Noreen broke her foot last year and is looking forward to a return to competitive running.      Sachem North Class of '07 Green Bandits Erin Rafferty (Bucknell University Track and Field), Erin McCormack (SUNY Buffalo) and Jess McCusker (SUNY Albany) are working their brains off at their respective colleges and missing their Sachem teammates.  Kerri Spatz and Kerry Hannigan (both '00) work together at Bethpage HS and coach middle school track and field at Bethpage.  Coach Galligan fondly remembers "Spannigan" exploits from "back in the day."  Kerri wrote that "we will have a whole team to mold into little sprinting/middle distance/ high jumping machines just like us!"  Kerry Hannigan will be returning to Sachem as a community member as she recently purchased a house across the street from Sycamore Ave. Park (XC/distance occasional training site) near North.      Class of '96ers Kristina Wilfinger-Foderaro and Jess Nazario work together at a school in Baltimore.  Kristina received her master's from Towson U. last year.  Kristina also reports that her husband is on his way to recovery following surgery last summer to remove a tumor in his back.  Christina Rega (East ('05) raised money for the New York Special Olympics team during a March 8 swim in Port Washington.  Way to go, Christina!  You can contact Christina on how to support this good cause.  Jeanna Composti ('99) graduates from Cornell Law School in May and will be heading to Manhattan to practice law.  She loves being an aunt to nephews Jack (nearly 2 years) and Nicky (6 months).      Congratulations to Maria Michta (North '04) and Jenna Monahan (East '07).  Maria continues to move up in the open RW national rankings and Jenna is one of the nation's top junior RWers.  Mushie and Jenna will represent Team USA in May at the World RW Cup held in Cheboksary, Russia.  For those without a map, Cheboksary is on the Volga River sort of in the middle of nowhere-ski.  Maria will race the 20K RW and Jenna will race 10K.  Good luck!!   Congratulations to Maria on being named C.W. Post valedictorian for the 2008 graduating class!      Princess Colleen Girardin ('03) will take her Nurse Licensure test this month before moving down to Myrtle Beach, SC.  I think Colleen is on LI this month -- stop by the track and say hi.      Mallory Delaney ('03) sends a note rearding big sis Meghan's Boston Marathon Challenge.  I do not want to leave anything important out of Mallory's message.  Please see below...

Subject: Meghan's Marathon Challenge Hi everyone,

I thought I would take this opportunity to tell you all a little about my patient partner for the Boston Marathon.  As most of you know, I am running the Boston Marathon on behalf of Children's Hospital.  What makes this experience so valuable is the fact that Children's has partnered me up with a patient partner.  Her name is Hailey and today I had lunch with her.  Hailey is 9 years old and she has osteogenisis imperfecta or brittle bone disease.  When Hailey was born she had 19 broken bones and wasn't expected to live more than a week.  Doctors said she would never talk and doctors said she would never walk.  Well, cut to nine years later and Hailey does both of these things!

Osteogenisis imperfecta is a disease of the collagen fibers of your bone.  The proteins that make your bones strong enough to withstand the forces of someone bumping into your shoulder and that allow you to trip and fall without much thought are missing in Hailey's make-up.  There are several different classes of OI and all are genetically passed from parents to child.  Hailey's mother, older sister and brother both have Type 1, meaning they are more likely to break bones than you or I, but not spontaneously.  They however were not diagnosed until Hailey was born and doctors realized that something was terribly wrong.  Hailey has type 2-3.  Type 2 is the most severe kind, where bones break spontaneously, or with very little force...like coughing.  Type two is fatal.  Type 3 is classified by short stature.  Hailey is a little person.  Right now she is riding around in a wheelchair after recently having broken her femur.

As you read in my initial email, I started thinking about running the marathon for many reasons, but now I have a face to inspire me.  She is lovely and she is smart and she is VERY excited to have her water station set up at Mile 13!  By supporting my run you are supporting tons of kids like Hailey who receive care at Children's Hospital everyday! And I thank you.

I promise to keep you all posted on our progress.  Thanks to all of you who have donated already and thank you all for your love and support!

Happy Holidays!
Meg

  SENT 10/3/07
Hi Alumni:
Happy Indian Summer (or whatever they are calling this very warm early fall weather).
We're just past the halfway mark of the meet season in XC at North and East.  Both teams are enjoying good seasons.  East is 3-0.  The East squad is led by senior twins Kristen and Kaitlyn Meyer.  North is 2-1, suffering is only loss of the season to date to Ward Melville (the team to beat on L.I.).  Junior Lindsay Romaine and senior rookie Ally Waka pack a solid 1-2  punch for the North Arrows.  You can see more North results on our team page at sachem.edu.    North and East meet for the 4th straight year in a League 2 contest next Tuesday (11/9) at North's home course.  Both boys and girls races are scheduled to go off at about 4 p.m.  Stop by and cheer for all the great Sachem athletes.    If you're around on Columbus Day (Monday, 10/8), stop by East for the annual Jeff Stone XC Run.  Elementary and Middle school kids will run on East's beautiful home XC course.  The XC run raises interest in running as well as generates money for the Jeff Stone Scholarship awarded to XC and/or track athletes at both high schools.  Pete McNeill continues to be the driving force behind this outstanding event.  I will miss the Jef Stone Run for the first time as I will be visiting Connecticut College with my son, Eric (he's a h.s. senior!).  Alumni Jaimie Donaruma and Lorraine Horgan will share Meet director duties with Pete. Alumni News (some of this news appeared in August)    Gina Aviles ('99) has been deployed to Iraq.  Her enlistment was set to end in May.  Gina was caught in the "stop-loss" program (a sort-of back door mil. draft) and sent to Iraq until fall, 2008.  E-mail Gina at gina.aviles@us.army.mil.  Jess Nazario ('99) was awarded a Masters from the School of Social Work at  University of Maryland, Baltimore in May.  Meghann DeVito ('02) is in San Fran. studying to be a P.A. (physician assistant).  Meghann donated some old but gently used track shoes to Kim Ferrara's ('99) track team before she moved.  Contact Kim of me if you can make a donation of equipment (or $ to buy equipment) for Bowne H.S. girls track team.       The following alumni were seen running around L.I.'s summer running circuit this past summer: 7/30 Caumsett 5K – Sue Filipowich; 7/23 Robert Moses 5K – age group top 5 = Sue Filipowich, Laura Reilly; 7/16 Belmont Lake 5K: Nat Johnston (’00) #1 female runner, Laura Reilly (’99), Sue Filipowich (’01?)7/1 Bellport Clipper 5K: Christine Tylee (E ’06), Ali O’Leary (N ’07); 6/24 4 mile Run Around the Lake: Lorraine Horgan (99).  Sue and Laura also ran the famous Brentwood 5K Cookie Run.  Natalie competed at the Tobay Triathlon in August    Local colleges are benefiting from Sachem alumni runners.  Christine Tylee (East '06) is Suffolk College's #1 harrier.  Ali O'Leary (North '07) is #2 at CW Post,  #3 runner Jenna Monahan (East '07) and Katie Williams (North '07) are teammates for St. Joseph's XC.  Meg Farrell ('North '04) and Lindsay LaFleur (East '05) are still tearing up the trails for Adelphi.  Christina DeLeon (East '05) is spending a semester at  New Mexico State U.  I hear that SW running agrees with Del!     Nicole Serio ('99) is running the NYC marathon as part of "Fred's Team" to support innovative research and treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Check Nicole’s site out at: https://fredsteam.mskcc.org/fundraising/Controller?action=userHome&user_id=37350&event_id=53.  Nicole's mom is a breast cancer survivor.    Congratulations to Nicole Lipari ('02) and Jen Scarola ('00) on their recent weddings.   Congratulations on your very beautiful baby K eri Seher-Phillips ('97) and your adorable baby Kelly Miller-Cavanaugh ('96).  When Kerri Spatz ('00) is not in Jen Scarola wedding parties with Jessie Chetuck ('01), she is teaching English (new job!) in Nassau County.    Continued success to all of our college alumni and to our new professionals.  Keep sending updates.  See you on the trails. I’m running to support innovative research and treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Fred’s Team consists of first-time and veteran marathon runners, all dedicated to raising funds for the race against cancer. Please support my physical and emotional journey to the finish line! Please check it out!! Check Nicole’s site out at: https://fredsteam.mskcc.org/fundraising/Controller?action=userHome&user_id=37350&event_id=53

From,
Nicole Serio
Congratulations to all Class of 2007 college grads!  Good luck as you begin your careers or continue your education.  Stay in touch with updates.    If you're still running and on LI, join us for Sunday a.m. runs at Connetquot State Park trails (entrance on Vets. Highway)  We start at 8:30.     Finally, plans are underway to start build one or more FART (Flaming Arrows Running Teams) teams for the annual Ocean to Sound Relay.  Let me know if you're interested in joining a team or if you plan on running with another relay.  Northrup-Grumman team member Laura Reilly ('99) and I ran the same leg last year and got to schmooze at the exchange zone for a while.  There's a great post-race party for potential FARTers who need additional incentive.

Kelly (Miller) Cavanuagh ('96) has a new addition to her family as 7 lb. 9 oz. Audrey joined big sister in the Cavanaugh clan on April 24.  Congratulations!
Tracey Willner ('02) was named First Year Teacher of the Year.  Tracey is a 5th grade teacher at Davis Drive Elementary School in North Carolina.  Tracey was the first Sachem gymnast to join our track team with the expressed interest in pole vaulting.  Sachem East pole vault alumni Stephanie Fleming ('06), Melanie Salomon ('07) and Amanda Sclafani ('07) are more recent gymnast-pole vaulters.  Congratulations, Tracey.    Congratulations, too, to the College Class of 2007.  You will be hearing about these outstanding Sachem alumni in the next weeks. 4/9/07 Update Hi Alumni:    Happy Easter and Happy Spring.  So much for global warming in the northeast as layered clothing, hats and gloves are being used to combat chilly temps.    Spring season goes on, though.  East's Laura Greene got within 15 seconds of Natalie Johnston's 2000 m. steeplechase record at Port Jeff's 2nd annual Steeplefest on 4/4.  East lost its 1st dual meet of the season against a very strong Longwood team.  North defeated Commack in its season opener in a pyrrhic victory as senior Erika Schramm injured her right hamstring while anchoring the 4x100.  Erika is one of the top 1/4 milers in Suffolk.  All-State pentathlete Rosie DeFino suffered a leg injury during a workout a few days later.  Erika's injury may be long term, Rosie may be back in a week.  North will tackle the toughest part of it's League 2 schedule without two of the county's top athletes.    Karyn Geoghan (North '06) kicked off her spring season with a 6th place finish at the UConn Inv. (16' 6.25").  Karyn's URI teammate Christina DeLeon (East '04) ran a 2:28 800 and 4:54.11 1500 m. at the Charlotte Inv. (3/31).  Natalie Johnston ('02) ran a p.b. 1500 m. (4:57) at the Wagner College Inv. yesterday [picture below].

Natalie Johnston placed second in the 1,500-meter run, setting a personal record with her 4:57.73 mark in the process. (note: C.W. Post release] Natalie's Post teammate Maria Michta (North '04) qualified for the U.S. team at the USA Team Trials - Pan American Race Walking Cup held in Miami on 3/17.  Maria placed 5th in the 20K distance in a time of 1:48.55.  Maria was joined in the race by Lorraine Horgan ('99). Lorraine placed 12th in 1:58.43.  Sachem East senior Jenna Monahan just missed making the junior US team as she placed 4th in the 10K RW in 55:25.  Adelphi's Lindsay LaFleur (East '04) ran a career-best in the 5000 m. run at the Monmouth Inv. on 3/24 with a time of 18:53.69.     Sachem alumni and siblings Connie (married last week -- congratulations!) and Anna Monroy are both teaching in Sachem district.  Anna is teaching science in a middle school (thanks for the update, Laura Michelson) and Connie is at Gatelot.     Way to go, Shirlee!!  Shirlee Manoogian ('00) is a member of the NY Sharks women's football team.  Shirlee was asked to try out for the team which is in the Independent Women's Football League.  Find out more about Shirlee at http://www.nysharksfootball.com/team/player.cfm/player=292.  The Sharks play their home games at Aviator Field in Brooklyn.  1st home game on 5/5.  Interested?  Let me know -- maybe we can carpool.  It figures that Shirlee -- holder of every swim record at North, and a record holder in many swim events at Stony Brook would find her way on to a team called the Sharks.    Kim Ferrara ('99) is teaching and coaching girls track & field at John Bowne H.S. in Queens.  Bowne H.S. is an overcrowded school with a large non-English speaking student population.  Kim has to purchase equipment and supplies for her team.  Contact me if you'd like to make a donation of any size for Kim's team.  Congratulations to Kim on her recent engagement.  Kim and former sachem teammate Laura Reilly ('99) live several blocks apart in Bayside.    Keep training, alumni.  Sachem will be holding its annual Hall of Fame 5K (start/finish at North) a week after Mother's Day.  More info to follow soon.
