On Tuesday, Nov. 5 librarians from across the Sachem Central School District attended the Long Island School Library Systems’ 6th Regional Institute.

At the Institute, librarian and former American Library Association President Dr. Barbara Stripling discussed her reimagining of the Information Fluency Continuum, a curriculum that librarians can follow that emphasizes information literacy and inquiry skills.

During lunch, the keynote speaker was television journalist Cheryl Wills, who spoke about her newest book, “A Hidden Figure from the Civil War: Emma,” chronicling her search for her ancestors who were slaves. Afterwards, the librarians participated in workshop sessions ranging from primary sources and historical records, to stress management for librarians, to byte-size coding and TeachingBooks databases.

Additionally, Sagamore Middle School library media specialist Sandy Bucher presented a session called “Coding with Sphero Bolts” in which she spoke about using Sphero Bolts in the library and in the classroom, across the curriculum, and how students could learn to code by drawing, block coding or Java Script.
