On Oct. 18, members of the Sachem community gathered for a celebratory event commemorating the 50th anniversary of Cayuga Elementary School and their commitment to excellence in education during that time.

They daylong event began with congratulatory welcome addresses by building principal Matthew Wells; Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham; the mayor of Lake Grove, Robert J. Scottaline; and retired Cayuga teacher Susan Heppeler. Additionally, several current students shared their reasons why Cayuga is a special place to them.

As the events continued, building retirees and guests were led on student-guided tours throughout the school where they learned interesting facts about Cayuga Elementary. In the cafetorium, guests enjoyed performances by members of the High School North chorus who were Cayuga alumni. As the chorus members performed, guests viewed an expansive slideshow of photos from the past and present.

To conclude the day’s celebration, a time capsule from 1969 was opened to reveal interesting items from the past that included a class yearbook, school assignments and tape recordings from past students. Current Cayuga students carried on the time capsule tradition by adding their own items to the capsule, to be opened again in 50 years.
