Feats of physics were on full display at Sachem High School North as students in Robert Wentzel’s Rocket and Aircraft Design class assembled and tested personal hovercrafts as part of a recent project.
Applying several laws of physics to determine the force needed to lift their hovercrafts, students tested the pressure produced by a leaf blower and determined they would have sufficient output to lift the vehicles from the ground. Using pool liner and plywood, students assembled their hovercrafts before testing them with help from members of their group.
As the project progresses, students will modify their personal hovercrafts to maneuver the hallways of the school building.
