Seneca’s Lego robotics team competed in the First Lego League Robotics Qualifier event at Mineola High School.

The team members include Christopher Acosta, Taylor Califano, Jackson Catalano, Michael Lubniewski, James Ryan, Matthew Scavo, Hannah Thomas, Matthew Vilbig and Ryan Zhu. They are led by co-coaches Heidi Michta and Michael Lundstrom, both teachers at Seneca.

The qualifier event consisted of four judging opportunities: project, core values, robot presentation and the robot game.

Each year there is a theme which influences each of these events. This year’s theme was “Into Orbit.” Each team had to “identify a human physical or social problem faced during long-duration space exploration within our Sun’s solar system and propose a solution.”

Seneca’s team researched radiation in space and its effects on the humans that work in the space stations. At the competition students presented their findings and their solution in a creative way in front of an audience of judges and parents. The rookie team also completed a mission in the robot game, and it was a huge success for them at the qualifier.
