On Saturday, January 26th, 2019 Seneca’s Lego Robotics Team competed in the first Lego League Robotics Qualifier event at Mineola High School. The team members are Matthew Scavo, Hannah Thomas, Michael Lubniewski, Christopher Acosta, Jackson Catalano, James Ryan, Taylor Califano, Ryan Zhu and Matthew Vilbig. They are lead by co-coaches, Heidi Michta and Michael Lundstrom, both teachers at Seneca.

The qualifier event consists of 4 judging opportunities: Project, Core Values, Robot Presentation and the Robot Game. Each year there is a theme which influences each of these events. This year’s theme was Into Orbit. Each team was faced with this specific problem to “identify a human physical or social problem faced during long duration space exploration within our Sun’s solar system and propose a solution.” Our team focused on researching radiation in space and its effects on the humans that work in the space stations. At the competition students presented their findings and their solution in a creative way in front of judges, parents, or anyone who came to cheer them on at the competition.

They were successful in completing a mission in the robot game and worked as a team the entire day. It was a huge success for a rookie team at the qualifier!
