Lynwood Avenue Elementary School has picked up where it left off last year with massive success in the Destination Imagination competition. The school’s fourth-grade team captured first place in the program’s Eastern Regional Tournament held this past week at Somers Middle School in upstate New York.

This team chose the Fine Arts Challenge in which students were tasked with creating a two-act musical. For this they had to design, create and integrate music and lyrics into both acts. They also created a spectacle that highlighted an unforgettable event in the story using two production techniques, as well as having had to integrate a set change that utilized technical methods. Finally, they had to create and present two “team choice elements” that showed off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength and talents.

The team consisted of Hannah Barkin, Ava Barrett, Dianna Burns, Jack Cordero, Kyle Fink, Keya Pai and Saiyum Sheth, and, of course, their team coach, Mrs. Dulovic.

The Destination Imagination program, a cocurricular activity at the school, encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts and service learning.

Lynwood’s participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and the collaborative problem-solving process.

These talented fourth-graders will continue to progress to larger tournaments throughout the spring. We will keep you updated on their fun and impactful educational journey.
